Practical ways to manage workplace stress

Starting a new job is exciting, especially if you’re just beginning your career. You’re full of energy, eager to do well, and ready to make your mark. It’s easy to throw yourself into work, but when work becomes everything, stress can build up fast- - and that stress doesn’t just stay at work. It can follow you home, affecting your mood and your relationships.
When stress takes over, we can become more tense, quick to snap, or feel distant from others. That’s why finding ways to manage stress is so important. Simple techniques can help you feel more in control, enjoy work more, and keep your relationships strong. Here are five easy ways to manage work stress and bring more calm into your life.

2/6

5-4-3-2-1 method

This is an incredible grounding technique that helps you to stay calm and composed. It is a simple method that requires you to notice 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste. This simple strategy helps bring your attention back immediately, to the present moment, significantly reducing anxiety, stress, and other overwhelming feelings and sensations.

3/6

Box breathing

Another effective and simple technique involves breathing for 4 seconds, holding your breath for 4 seconds, breathing out for 4 seconds, and then holding again for 4 seconds. Simply imagine and take this breathing exercise as if you are drawing a box with your breath, and therefore, it is named the box breathing technique. It efficiently helps calm your nervous system, reduce anxiety, and clear your mind at the workplace and other over-stimulating environments.

4/6

Apply the two-minute rule

The Two-Minute Rule is a simple strategy to quit wasting time, which ultimately eliminates the unnecessary stress and anxiety related to the small pending tasks at work. It means that if the task can be taken care of in two minutes or less, you should do it now, rather than saving it for later. This is because if people keep adding little things in addition, the little things may turn into bigger tasks when they are needed the most and cause added stress. For example, when you have an email that you need to respond to immediately, do it immediately; do not delay.

5/6

Take an active rest

Sometimes, the most simple methods can be the most beneficial in reducing stress and anxiety at the workplace. All you need to do is get away from your work, even for just a few minutes, if not more. It can significantly help in reducing the feeling of stress and anxiety. Simply go for a little walk, a short drink break, a little stretch, or anything that gets your mind off work. A little change in the environment is necessary and incredibly beneficial, as it provides your body as well as mind a chance to recharge.

6/6

Gratitude pause

The Gratitude Pause is a simple way to feel better when you're stressed. Just stop for a moment and think of three things you're thankful for- - it can be anything from small to significant, such as a fun talk with a coworker, a nice and warm cup of coffee, to getting appreciated at work. Focusing on what’s good in your day helps you feel calmer and more positive, taking your mind off stress.
