4 things you should know before befriending your boss

Here's what you must do

So many employees have this silly habit of trying to befriend the boss. But bosses have their own limits too! Sometimes a boss you thought is friendly could be the one who back stabs you during appraisals or he/she simply likes to draw a line and come to office not for making friends but for working! So, it is best to follow these 4 rules. Remember these things before you plan on befriending your boss.

2/5

Being friends and having a friendly behaviour are 2 different things

Do not misconstrue pleasantries with friendship. If your boss is nice to you that does not mean that he/she is trying to be buddies with you. It takes time to make friends and some bosses are not what they seem to be either. They may even choose to draw a line and are just warm as a person.

3/5

Your personal business is only YOUR business

No matter how nice your boss is or how friendly, it doesn't mean that you rant about your personal life to them. Oversharing is never welcomed and never respected. If you expect that only you have problems, your own boss may be in need of a shrink. But they have a job to get the work done, so they cannot care what’s going on with you unless it is affecting your work quality.

4/5

Listen & observe, speak only when you have to

As an employee, it is best to be a good observer, listen more and speak only when you must. Somehow, you will notice that even your boss pays attention to the work of the one who is more quiet and hardworking. If you want to befriend your boss, make a good impression, then be smart!

5/5

No gossiping

You will be respected if you don’t gossip, especially about your own co-workers with your boss. Some bosses gladly indulge you to know what is going on but you must know that talks are like Chinese whispers and gossip is never confined to a single room. In the end, you will be the one who will be questioned.
