Coping with your girlfriend's best friend

A lot has been said and written about the bond that a man shares with his girlfriend’s best friend. Recently, a video was trending on social media where a man enthusiastically pours his heart out about how his girlfriend’s best friend is his enemy! But like them or not, most men learn to live with their girlfriend’s BFFs. However, your relationship with your girlfriend can change a lot if you learn to enjoy her best friend’s company and genuinely appreciate their friendship. Instead of considering your girlfriend’s best friend as competition or enemy, here’s why and you need to work on your equation with your girlfriend’s friend:

2/9

Because a best friend is a friend, philosopher and guide

A best friend is not merely a friend, he or she is the gatekeeper of all secrets, a philosopher and guide. When you are at loggerheads with your girlfriend’s best friend, you are not just antagonising a single person but challenging the host of roles the best friend plays in your girlfriend’s life.

3/9

It’s a sacred bond

Remember, your girlfriend’s best friend might have been in her life way before you made an appearance. They too have shared moments and enjoyed experiences that they will remember for a lifetime. This is a bond that might have survived hundreds of fights and miles of distance. Give it the respect it deserves.

4/9

Don’t consider it as a threat or competition

A lot of men end up making this mistake. They consider the best friend as a threat or competition. Whenever you feel so, just think about this—every relation has its own place and importance in a person’s life. For example—your girlfriend’s best friend cannot take your place and vice versa. So, there is no need to feel threatened or insecure.

5/9

Weigh the pros and cons

Before you try to dismiss her best friend from your life, weight on the pros and cons of this decision. By doing so the person you will be hurting most will be your girlfriend. She loves you both and each occupies a different space in her life. Remember, friends are the family we choose and by questioning her friend, you are also doubting her choice.

6/9

Work on your compatibility with her friends

Keeping aside all the notions about how your girlfriend’s best friend can be a hurdle in your relationship, try to know the person from a fresh perspective. You may or may not like him or her initially, but that’s only human. Every relationship needs time and you need to invest your time and energy on this one as well.

7/9

If not friends, at least be amicable

We understand that it’s not easy to be friends with people suddenly. And if you fail to strike a friendship, at least try to be amicable with your girlfriend's best friend. A person treats you that way you treat him or her. It’s no rocket science to understand that if you are hostile towards him or her, you too will be treated the same.

8/9

If you have a problem, say so without criticising the person

A lot of time, we blame a person rather than the situation when something goes wrong. The same holds true when things turn ugly in your love life. Instead of criticising her best friend, try to understand the situation that might have forced you to arrive at such an opinion about the person. Once you understand the problem, let your girlfriend know without dragging her best friend into it.

9/9

Spending time together

Sometimes, we do not understand a person because we haven't spend enough time with him or her. One way to understand your girlfriend’s best friend and thaw your relationship is by spending more time together. A get way to do that is by planning a movie night or a weekend gateway with your friends and her friends as well.
