When exactly should you introduce your boyfriend to your family?

Introducing your partner to your family

You are in a serious relationship with your partner and are planning for a lifetime of togetherness. Your parents are unaware of this relationship and have started looking for a prospective groom for you. You know you will have to disclose this to your family in the coming days, but when should you exactly do it? Most importantly, are you sure it is the right time to take your relationship to the next level? Here are some points you should consider before taking this plunge.

2/7

Are you sure he’s the one?

This is the very first question you should ask yourself. Are you sure that you are truly in love with him and see him as your future husband? Introducing him to your family is surely a big step and there might be no looking back once you involve your family. Hence, it is really important to be sure about your own feelings and expectations from this relationship before taking a call.

3/7

How long have you been dating?

The initial months of a relationship are generally a ‘honeymoon’ phase. Everything is romantic and life seems no less than a fairy tale. But you understand the pros and cons of being in a relationship with your boyfriend only when you have dated him for quite some time. So, before introducing your partner to your family, make sure you love him despite his flaws and embrace him for the person he is.

4/7

The finances

This is another logical point to consider before making the move. Like every parent, even your parents will brood over how both of you will manage financial matters once you start living together. Therefore, ask yourself whether both are professionally stable and financially secured to afford a comfortable living. And be prepared to answer any finance-related questions raised by your parents.

5/7

Life after marriage

Life might take an unexpected turn once you tie the knot as you might have different expectations from your boyfriend once he becomes your husband. It is a good idea to brood over what kind of life you would like to have after marriage. Would you like to work or be a homemaker? Would you like to travel solo, not change your last name, manage household chores etc.—now is the time to clarify such things, which you think might impact your married life. Having this discussion will bring both of you on the same page and prepare to answer your parents’ queries confidently.

6/7

What about him?

While you have been thinking of introducing your boyfriend to you parents, is he even prepared for this move? Again, before making any decision, make sure he is also willing for the same. Try to be in his shoes and take things ahead only when he’s 100 per cent comfortable with the decision.

7/7

Your gut feeling

If you and your boyfriend have discussed everything and you are still having second thoughts about your decision, try to understand your gut feeling and take a call. You have dated him for quite some time and there is a reason that you both are still together, right? Trust your instinct and simply go with the flow.
