Is your pooch sneezing constantly this season? Or does the chill in the air make him/her shiver?
While Mumbai may not be freezing cold, the steep drop in the temperature this season, could result in several ailments among pets that include a runny nose, winter allergy or pneumonia, in extreme cases. “During this season, dogs are mostly at home. And due to the lack of fresh air in the house, the chances of allergies arise,” says city vet, Dr Avinash Shedge.

“Fever, cough, constant sneezing and nose discharge are the most common problems among cats and dogs in this season,” says vet Dr Sunetra Wadke. In some cases, hypothermia may also cause pneumonia.
Other ailments that pooches are prone to include dry, flaky skin and cracked paws. “Red skin, itching in the feet, belly, paws and face are few symptoms of skin allergies in dogs. This is mainly caused because of dry skin,” says Dr Shedge. Arthritis among dogs is another common winter health problem.
Keep temperature steady
The best way to prevent skin allergies is by keeping pets warm in clean surroundings with low humidity. “Don’t take the dog out for a walk post 10 pm. After the dog is back from a walk, don’t switch on the fan immediately. Make your pets wear warm clothing like sweater, scarf, socks etc,” says Dr Wadke. Moreover, avoid feeding cold food to your pet. “Warm chicken soup and fruits are good options,” she adds.

Light up
“Use woollen dog blankets with a warm, soft bedding. The part where your dog sleeps can be kept warmer by lighting a 60 to 100 watt bulb, suspended from a height of three or four feet,” says Dr Shedge.
Dos and don’ts
Do not leave your pet outdoors, unattended or for longer duration. n Keep a check on its body temperature by feeling his extremities frequently.
Pets that are housed outside are susceptible to developing infections and disorders. “If your dog’s kennel is outside, make sure that the kennel is adequately protected from wind and cold,” says Dr Shedge.
Opt for non-electric warm bedding or heated floor mats for your dog.
Give them ample warm water to prevent cold and cough.
