Pet care during Holi 2025

Holi, the festival of colors, is one of India’s most vibrant celebrations. Streets come alive with joyous laughter, clouds of colors, and the scent of festive treats. However, while humans revel in the festivities, the impact on animals, particularly pets and strays, is often overlooked. The colors that symbolize happiness for us can turn into a nightmare for our furry companions.

Every year, incidents of animal distress spike during Holi due to the use of synthetic colors, loud noises, and reckless behaviour. Dogs and cats often suffer from skin allergies, eye infections, and respiratory problems due to exposure to chemical-laden powders. Birds are affected too, as dry colors settle on their feathers, making flight difficult. This raises a crucial question—how do we ensure that our celebrations do not come at the cost of animal well-being?

The harmful effects of Holi colours on animals
While traditional Holi colors were made from flowers and natural extracts, modern synthetic powders contain toxic chemicals such as lead, mercury, and asbestos. These chemicals, when inhaled or ingested by animals, can cause serious health complications. Stray dogs and cats, who often roam the streets in search of food, unknowingly lick their fur coated with colors, leading to poisoning, vomiting, and even organ failure.

Veterinary clinics report a rise in skin infections and allergic reactions in pet’s post-Holi. The alkaline nature of these colors causes itching, rashes, and severe irritation. In some cases, prolonged exposure can result in irreversible damage to the skin and fur, requiring medical intervention. Pet owners must take preventive steps to shield their animals from such risks, ensuring a stress-free festival.

Noise pollution and its psychological impact
Holi is not just about colors; it also brings with it an increase in loud music, bursting of balloons, and firecrackers in some regions. The heightened noise levels can be terrifying for animals, whose hearing is far more sensitive than humans. Dogs, in particular, suffer from anxiety, restlessness, and in extreme cases, heart complications due to sudden loud noises.

Street animals have nowhere to escape, leading to erratic behaviour, road accidents, and trauma. Pet parents should create a safe indoor environment, using noise-cancelling techniques such as playing soft music or providing a cozy space for their pets to retreat. Animal welfare organizations emphasize the need for public awareness to curb reckless behaviour that endangers animals during Holi.

Stray Animals: The unseen victims of HoliStray animals face the brunt of Holi celebrations, as they are often doused in colors by unthinking revellers. For them, there is no one to clean off the harmful substances, leaving them vulnerable to infections and poisoning. Many animal activists have been advocating for stricter regulations against animal cruelty during festivals, but enforcement remains weak.

A Responsible Holi: How we can helpCelebrating Holi responsibly does not take away from the joy of the festival; rather, it enhances it by ensuring that no harm is caused to innocent beings. Here are some simple yet effective ways to ensure pet and stray safety during Holi 2025:
- Use natural colors: Opt for organic, flower-based colors that are non-toxic and safe for animals.
- Keep pets indoors: Create a comfortable space where pets can stay stress-free during the festivities.
- Avoid loud noises: Refrain from bursting balloons or playing excessively loud music near animals.
- Educate children: Teach young ones to celebrate without harming stray animals.
- Wash off colors immediately: If an animal gets colored, gently wash it off with water and mild shampoo. Avoid using kerosene or detergents, as they worsen skin conditions.
- Support local shelters: Donate to animal welfare organizations working to rescue and rehabilitate injured strays post-Holi.
Holi is a time for love, laughter, and togetherness. Let’s extend this spirit to all living beings, ensuring that our celebrations remain joyous without causing harm. By being mindful of our actions, we can make Holi 2025 a festival of kindness—one where the colors of compassion shine the brightest
