The gradually dipping mercury levels has got city residents digging into their winter wardrobes. Other than pulling out their sweaters, jackets and shawls, people are also ensuring that they have their pets’ winterwear in place. TOI tells you all that you need to know to ensure that your furry friend is hale and hearty through the winter.
Special grooming, regular walks The winter chill often sees reduced mobility in pets who prefer staying indoors but regular walks are an absolute must, affirm city vets.
“Pets should ideally be taken for walks both in the morning and evening for at least 20 minutes. Regular walks help maintain their energy level, improve appetite and body functions. However, they should not be kept outdoors for too long or else they might catch a cold,” says Niti Singh Chouhan, a city-based vet.
Warm, cosy bedding Pets too love snuggling and staying warm during winters, so pet owners should ensure that they have a warm and cozy bed. Kulsoom Syed, is all set to buy new blankets for her cat Cecil. She says, “The blankets will act as insulation and keep Cecil warm. We plan to keep the blankets in his favourite corner of the house.” If the pet’s bedding is usually outdoors, it needs to be lined with thick blankets and rugs for adequate warmth.
Routine health checkups are must Inspite of precautions, pets are prone to fall sick during winters. If they display symptoms of lethargy or loss of appetite, consult a doctor immediately. “B-complex, Omega 3 and 5 should be given to pets regularly during winter to regulate body function. Routine health checks are also important. As animals are prone to catching a cold or fever, timely medical attention can keep sickness at bay,” said city vet Anil Bhadekar.
Proper diet and water intake Besides exercise and timely checkups, the pet’s daily diet is also vital to its well-being in winter. Care should be taken to administer a balanced diet and overfeeding should be avoid. Speaking about the winter diet for pets, Santosh Deshpande, a professional pet trainer, said, “Boiled eggs or meat should be a part of the pet’s daytime meal whereas boiled vegetables should be included for dinner as these are easier to digest. Pets also tend to drink less water during winters, so their bowl must be replenished every two to three hours.”
Funky winter wear City markets are full of interesting winter wear for your pets. From insulateded jackets and monkey caps to socks, footwear and complete body sets, pets this winter are going to be spoilt for choice. “This year, there is a massive demand for printed winter clothing among pet owners. Winter wear for pets is available in interesting colours and patterns at `300 onwards,” said Ranjit Koradiwal, owner of pet clothing and accessories shop.
