Aquarium creatures that keep the tank clean

Keeping an aquarium is a challenging, yet deeply rewarding experience. You not only have to take care of the fish by giving them a spacious tank, good water conditions, and a healthy diet but also have to clean the tank regularly for maintaining it. However, did you know that there are some aquatic creatures that act like “natural cleaners,” eating leftover food, algae, and waste that can make the tank dirty. Adding these aquatic species not only keeps the fish tank balanced but also makes it more beautiful and healthy for your fish. So, here are some unique aquarium creatures that help keep the fish tank clean naturally:

2/6

Amano shrimp

Amano shrimp are small but mighty cleaners. They are known for eating any algae build-up in the tank, leftover food, and even dead plant material-- thus keeping the tank clean and preventing any food rot. These little shrimps are also peaceful in nature, and so they do well in community tanks.

3/6

Nerite snails

Nerite snails are one of the best algae eaters in fish tank you can have. They clean the glass, decorations, and plants without harming them. The good part about Nerite snails is that they don’t reproduce in freshwater, and so there is no problem of overpopulation. Also, they not only clean the tank but also add beauty to it with their stunning shell patterns.

4/6

Pgymy corydoras catfish

Pgymy Corydoras catfish, or “Cory” catfish, are bottom-dwelling grouping fish that love to clean up leftover food and debris from the substrate. Since they are grouping fish, they should be kept in a group of eight or more. Also, they are peaceful in nature which makes them a great addition to community tanks. Besides cleaning, their playful swimming adds charm and activity to the aquarium, making them both useful and entertaining aquatic pets to watch.

5/6

Siamese algae eater

As their name suggests, Siamese algae eater are hardworking fish that eats almost every type of algae-- thus keeping the tank clean in return. They are active and peaceful, making them a great addition to medium or large aquariums. Apart from algae, they also enjoy eating sinking pellets and fresh vegetables. Remember to keep them in small groups to encourage their natural cleaning behaviour.

6/6

Mystery snails

Mystery snails are small, colourful and fun to watch, but they also serve an important purpose — which is cleaning the tank! They feed on algae, decaying leaves, and leftover food, helping reduce waste buildup. Their large, smooth shells come in many colors, adding a decorative touch to the tank. Unlike pest snails, they don’t reproduce uncontrollably and are easy to care for. Mystery snails also help aerate the substrate by burrowing lightly, promoting better water circulation at the bottom of the tank.
