Should you keep your relationship status a secret on social media?

There was a time when being in a relationship was a private business and everyone was happy keeping it that way. But with the emergence of technology and social media, one feels obliged and sometimes coerced to make it public. Announcing your relationship status to your friends or family is not a bad idea, but when you do it on such a vast platform, you cannot avoid all the unnecessary comments and opinions that may come from people you don’t even know. Whether you are happily single or in a beautiful relationship, or if you and your partner have chosen to be in an open relationship, it’s all up to you. But once you make it official on a public platform, you must gear up for the consequences. Therefore, to help you make your decisions wisely, here are some reasons why you should keep away from disclosing your relationship status.

2/7

To avoid unnecessary gossip

Once you make your relationship public, you open yourself up to people’s opinions and judgments. While it may not seem so, but people are always looking for something new to discuss or gossip about and what can be more exciting and spicier than someone’s relationship status. If you want to avoid the unnecessary commotion and drama, its better you keep your relationship status to yourself.

3/7

When you don’t want others to mind your romantic business

There’s no harm in letting people know if you’re committed or not, until the same people make it their mission to either destroy it or mend it for you. Your relationship is yours to mind and no one can understand it better than you. Therefore, by making it public, you invite a lot of attention from people who have nothing to do with your relationship status.

4/7

You don’t want to pressurize your partner

When you’re in a relationship, you want to tell the entire world about it. But that may not be the case with your partner. As much as you want it, your partner may not be that comfortable declaring it to the mass audience. It can be either because he or she wants to avoid becoming the talk of the town or they want to keep it a secret unless they are sure about it.

5/7

To make moving on easier in case it doesn't work out

Break ups can be hard and to immediately refresh your relationship status from ‘In a relationship’ to ‘Single’ or to ‘It’s complicated’ can be hard on your ex. It can not only break your ex’s heart but also create a lot of buzz. For the sake of all the good times spent together, you owe him/her some time to get over this rough patch.

6/7

To avoid requests and invitations

Keeping your relationship status a mystery can save you from a lot of unwanted attention. There’s a difference between being privately single and declaring it on a social platform. By making it public, you make it more noticeable to the eyes and therefore people cannot resist sending you crazy texts and follow requests, which only becomes a nuisance with time.

7/7

If you have nosy relatives

One of the things that most affects a person are nosy relatives, especially when they have social media accounts and are also a part of your friend’s list. Relatives, who judge, will never be satisfied with what you do in life. If you are in a relationship, they’ll have an issue. If you declare that you’re single, they’ll raise their concerns. The only thing you can do is keep it a secret and avoid unnecessary judgments.
