Short and sweet
It is important to give the impression that you lead a full, active life even though you might be otherwise unemployed. By keeping your initial telephone conversations brief, you will give the person the impression that you are busy and in demand.
Leave them high
People usually remember what you say last. Crack a joke or relate a funny story before hanging up. Even if your entire conversation went poorly, if you leave them smiling before saying goodbye, they are more likely to want to speak to you again.
Add purpose
Don’t just call to chitchat. Be armed and ready with a purpose to your call (the most likely purpose being to meet up); this will give them the impression that you are assertive and thoughtful enough to think of a plan beforehand .
Leave a message only on the second call
You should avoid leaving a message on the first call; it may make you seem too needy. Leave a message when you call the second time and don’t call again until they get back to you. This way you can avoid appearing desperate and also gauge their interest in you.
Time your call well
Phone calls during work hours are a big no. If you take time off from work to call them, they’ll know you have them on your mind. If you’d like to set up a date for the weekend, call by Wednesday.
Stick to the point when leaving messages
Every message you leave on voicemail could be played back and analysed several times over. It may be discussed with friends too. Keep your conversation brief. Identify yourself by name, leave one phone number where you can be reached. Don’t leave your address or e-mail address, it would seem desperate.
