What is love sickness? 6 signs you can't miss

Here's what lovesickness can look like

While the feeling of love is one filled with sunshines and daisies, it can also be stressful and triggering. When things start going south in the love department, it can lead to angst, despair and trouble. When things in the romance department aren't going our way, it's not uncommon to experience what's sometimes referred to as lovesickness.

Lovesickness is like an emotional storm that brews when you're head over heels for someone. It's not an official medical condition, but it's the term used when those feelings of romantic attraction hit you like a tidal wave. This emotion can mess with your physical well-being too. Here are six unmistakable signs you or your friend is experiencing lovesickness.

2/7

Obsessive thoughts

Lovesickness can lead to obsession over a particular person or his/her traits. You may find yourself constantly thinking about the person you're infatuated with. Further, obsession can be impersonated into irrational behaviour. Going to extreme ends to make yourself seem desirable to the other person or following them around to pick up their habits are a part and parcel of lovesickness.

3/7

Controlling behaviour

You know you're lovesick when you start modifying your surroundings to create the perfect stage for your love story. Your love interest's preferences become your rulebook. And you might just find yourself unintentionally trying to impress them – like knowing their coffee order by heart and suggesting it's time to hang out in their favourite shop.

4/7

Emotional turmoil

Lovesickness often leads to emotional highs and lows. You might feel euphoric and elated when thinking about the person you love and imagining scenarios wherein the two of you have a happy ending, but also experience moments of sadness, anxiety, or even jealousy when reality starts to kick in.

5/7

Collectors instinct

Lovesickness also comes with material accumulation. One might have seen their love interest wearing a certain brand shirt and then go on to buy several products by the same brand. Or on the extreme end, someone might preserve the tissue their love interest once wiped their face with.

6/7

Difficulty concentrating

Lovesickness can make it challenging to concentrate on tasks or engage in activities that used to capture your attention easily. Your mind might wander back to thoughts of the person you're infatuated with. One might easily find themselves daydreaming about the other person and making scenarios in their head while cleaning the house or doing other tasks.

7/7

Overthinking & overanalysing

Every word, every gesture, every tiny action – they will be scrutinised with a microscope. A simple door held open by your crush can send your heart racing. But if you see them doing the same for someone else, it's like your heart hits the pause button, only to shatter into a thousand pieces.
