The Krampus: A Festive Fright in Germany and Austria

It is not just fun, gifts, and cheer with Christmas in Germany and Austria. There is also this dark side to it, so let's introduce Krampus, a creepy creature wearing horns, hooves, and a scary face; he is said to punish naughty kids. December 5th is Krampusnacht, a time when people dress up as Krampus and roam the streets, chasing and scaring others for entertainment. While Santa rewards good children, Krampus sees to it that naughty ones are kept in check.

KFC: The Japanese Christmas Feast

Christmas is not a national holiday in Japan, but the country has its special way to celebrate it. Rather than serving turkey or ham, most people eat fried chicken on Christmas Day. This interesting tradition started back in the 1970s from a clever KFC advertisement that has now become a part of the Christmas tradition in Japan. December is the busiest month for KFC as families wait in long queues to grab their festive chicken.

Predicting Love with Shoes in the Czech Republic

In the Czech Republic, Christmas brings with it a pinch of fortune-telling fun. In this tradition, an unmarried woman stands facing the door and throws one shoe over her shoulder. When the shoe falls and its toe points toward the door, she is told she will get married soon. It is a lively way of combining holiday fun with a sort of fortune-telling fun.

Hiding Brooms to Protect Against Witches in Norway

In Norway, Christmas Eve takes a spooky turn. As one would believe in ancient times, it was a night when witches and evil spirits roamed about. And so, even today people cover up all their brooms and cleaning tools before sleeping as those witches cannot steal the items to fly around their house. This is the unique tradition of celebrating Christmas that the country once followed.

Spiders and Webs on Christmas Trees in Ukraine

In Ukraine, Christmas trees carry a different kind of twist altogether: They are decorated with fake spider webs. This derives from a warm-hearted folk story about a poor family who did not have money to pay for their Christmas tree's decorations. However, on Christmas morning they woke up to find that a spider had woven a wonderful web across the tree, thus decorating it and bringing good luck to them. From then, hanging spider decorations on Christmas trees is believed to carry fortune and blessings in the coming year.

Unusual Christmas Foods in Greenland

Christmas meals in Greenland are far from what would be seen as usual in turkey or ham. The local dishes include Mattak, raw whale skin with blubber, and Kiviak, a special treat where small birds are wrapped in seal skin for months before being fermented. Some may find these odd but they form a huge part of Greenland's Christmas traditions, showing the resourcefulness of the people and the connection to the Arctic environment.

The Yule Goat in Scandinavia

The Yule Goat is the oldest Christmas tradition in Scandinavian countries. In old times, it was thought to be a spirit checking whether people were holding the correct celebration of Christmas. Gradually, it started being like a gift-giver, just like Santa Claus. Today, it's more of a holiday decoration but it is still the heart of Christmas in Scandinavia.

Pudding Tossing in Slovakia

In Slovakia, Christmas dinner comes with a quirky twist! After the meal, the head of the family takes some Christmas pudding and throws it at the ceiling. The more pudding that sticks, the more luck the family is believed to have in the next year. It’s a playful tradition that adds some fun and laughter to the holiday celebrations.

Catalonia’s Defecating Log and Figurines

In Catalonia, Spain, Christmas comes with some truly unique traditions. One of the quirkiest is the Caga Tió, or "pooping log." Families keep a wooden log on their table in the weeks before Christmas, “feeding” it sweets and keeping it warm with a blanket. On Christmas Eve, kids hit the log with sticks, and it “poops” out small gifts and candies.

Another fun tradition is the Caganer, a little figurine of someone defecating, placed in nativity scenes. It adds a cheeky twist to the display, and modern versions often feature famous people, blending humour with tradition.
