Things dusky women hear during wedding matchmaking

Looking for a suitable match in the Indian matchmaking scenario can truly be a nightmare. Men and women both face harsh criticism over their abilities when people come to see rishtas. One of the most prominent criticisms Indian women face is over their dusky complexion. They are called out for their dark skin tone and aren’t made to feel beautiful. Say it louder for the people at the back, “dark skin tone is beautiful!” And to feel this deeper, these 5 women share what all they got to hear during their match-making time.

Anyone is beautiful

“I hate being reeled under the cover of my complexion. I have always had amazing genes, and not to boast but I have always appreciated my facial features. I had never thought about my dusky complexion until one day when the rishtas started rolling in, a guy told me I looked beautiful even though I was dark. That hurt.”

Diet advices

“I don’t understand why people are so eager to give me free advice on how to lighten my skin tone. Some would say apply curd or lemon on your face to lighten it up, just in time for the wedding. It is not only insulting but incredibly disrespectful!”

Makeup tactics

“Among the many makeup professionals I had consulted, there was one who had straightaway given me a prescription for lightening my skin. It was a 3 months treatment schedule that was not only expensive but unnecessary. My dark skin tone was natural. Why would I want to change that? To make it worse, that makeup professional said that she’ll only do the makeup once I adhere to the treatment. I didn’t even offer her water at my home.”

The gossiping neighbouring aunties

“When I reached a marriageable age, all the neighbouring aunties started gossiping about how I would never get a good match because I was so dusky. I remember crying myself to sleep after being affected by such harsh comments. But the joke’s on them now. Three years later, I am happily married to the love of my life.”

Kavya, 32 years old

The option of being picky

“Don’t be too picky! You will never get a guy - This is what everyone said to me when I was trying to project my preferences over the man I want to marry. Apparently, since I was so dusky, I shouldn’t be too demanding since there would be fewer men anyways who would want to marry a dark-toned woman like me. I feel extremely enraged to hear such comments from everyone at all times.”

Tanisha, 27 years old
