Susie Wiles’ age-gap marriage and divorce: All about the White House Chief of Staff’s personal life
The long-time political strategist’s personal life has also come into the spotlight amid the release of the two-part interview. Here’s everything you need to know about Susie Wiles’ age-gap marriage, divorce and family.
Who is Susie Wiles?
Susan Summerall Wiles, 68, born in Lake City, Florida. The daughter of the late NFL player and sportscaster Pat Summerall, she was raised in Stamford, Connecticut, and Saddle River, New Jersey. Susan Wiles is the eldest of three children.
A long-time political strategist, Susie Wiles made history this year as the first woman appointed White House Chief of Staff by President Trump.
Susie Wiles’ personal life
Susie Wiles met Lanny Wiles during Ronald Reagan’s presidential campaign in the early 1980s. Lanny, a seasoned GOP advance man and consultant, was 14 years her senior. They bonded, of course, over politics. They married in 1984 and relocated to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. Susie Wiles told Vanity Fair that she wanted to “start a family and a life outside politics.”
For over three decades, Susie Wiles and her husband navigated their personal life amid the demands of their high-stakes political careers. Like many long-term marriages, they had their share of ups and downs. However, in 1991, the couple filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, following Lanny’s business setbacks. According to the Daily Mail, there was also another piece of litigation in which the prosecution sought to garnish Susie’s hard-earned wages while she was working for the mayor of Jacksonville, Florida. That case was eventually settled, however, the financial troubles also dragged her into the mess. Although the debts were reportedly settled, these issues lingered. The couple divorced in 2017 after 33 years of marriage. This was 'due to his bad financial decisions', the outlet reported. Talking about her life and career to the outlet recently, she said, “My kids are grown. I’m divorced.” She chose to frame her personal situation in the context of her professional commitment, “This is what I do if I stay four years.” Across her public comments and interviews, Wiles does not dwell on her divorce or recast it as a dramatic personal story. She rather sticks with the facts, which clearly shows how she separates personal life from her role.
They have two daughters, Katie and Caroline. Caroline followed in her parents’ footsteps and ventured into politics.
