Stereotypes every Indian bride faces during her wedding

Indian weddings are incredibly grand, magnificent and lavish. From intricate wedding rituals to detailed wedding attires, every Indian wedding is a sight to see. With all eyes on the bride and groom, these couples feel immense pressure on their wedding day as they’re expected to go through everything smoothly, not to mention their nerves going on a frenzy! However, it’s no surprise that Indian brides go through a lot of judgements as they are coerced to follow patriarchal and chauvinistic rituals on their special day. However, today women are challenging such norms and creating a widespread impact among all women in the country. In account of this, we have listed the most common stereotypes every bride faces in Indian weddings.

2/6

Wearing bridal attires

Brides who have worn the heavy, ornamental, detailed bridal attires know the struggle. These heavy lehengas or sarees can be a real nuisance if you’re looking to enjoy your special day. Ditching the traditional attire shouldn’t invite any judgments from people as with progressing times, women should definitely have a say in what they would like to wear on their wedding day.

3/6

Male priests for the rituals

Since wedding ceremonies have started in India, it has always been a requirement that a male priest performs the rituals. However, there are many aspiring priestesses in India who have a far efficient grasp of Sanskrit rituals and knowledge than the average male priest. Gender shouldn’t determine one’s ability to perform wedding rituals. But many women priestesses are shattering societal judgements and edging towards many wedding ceremonies now.

4/6

Fun and excitement during the wedding

The neighbourhood aunties will soon start gossiping about how disorderly a bride is if she tries to have fun on her wedding day. Brides are asked to sit quietly and see others dance, sing and have the best time of their lives. Whereas, brides deserve to have the most fun on their wedding day.

5/6

Crying during Bidaai

As the bride prepares to leave the wedding venue and go to her husband’s home, she is expected to cry because she’s leaving her parental home. But why should people criticise those women who choose to smile ear to ear and show a happy, fulfilling face during Bidaai? Brides shouldn’t feel forced to cry especially if she feels happy and content.

6/6

Shy and reserved during the wedding day

Are you familiar with brides sitting quietly, looking shy on their wedding day? That’s because they have been taught to be the typically reserved bride whom everyone comes and meets with. A bride should never be subjected to such norms. She deserves to have the most pompous fun on her wedding day.
