Miranda Hobbes: 5 dating advice from Cynthia Nixon's most loved character

Here are five of them, straight from the character who was often more relatable than glamorous

When Sex and the City first came out, everyone picked their “spirit character.” Carrie got all the drama, Charlotte got the picture-perfect dreams, Samantha got the bold lines. And then there was Miranda smart, sarcastic, sometimes cranky, but probably the most realistic of the four.

Cynthia Nixon made Miranda feel like someone you could actually know: the friend who would roll her eyes at your bad choices but also help you sort them out over Chinese takeout. And when it came to dating, Miranda’s messy experiences actually left us with advice that still works. Here are five of them, straight from the character who was often more relatable than glamorous.

2/6

Don’t say yes just because you hate being alone

Miranda was never shy about admitting when she felt lonely. In fact, some of her most honest lines came when she talked about coming home to an empty apartment after a long day. Miranda dated a few guys who were clearly not right for her remember the lazy ones, the clueless ones? Most of the time, she stuck around because she was tired of coming home to silence. The thing is, those relationships made her feel lonelier than being single ever did.

That’s the first lesson: Being with the wrong person doesn’t cure loneliness, it just makes it worse.

3/6

Independence doesn’t have to scare love away

Unlike Charlotte, who openly dreamed of the perfect marriage, Miranda never pretended that domestic bliss was her only goal. Miranda was the career-driven one, the lawyer who worked insane hours and didn’t apologize for it. That scared off some men, but it also meant she never shrank herself just to be loved. With Steve, she struggled to balance her independence with commitment, but she never lost herself.

And maybe that’s the point wanting a relationship doesn’t mean giving up your ambition. The right partner gets that.

4/6

Be blunt, even if it’s uncomfortable

Miranda’s sharp tongue got her into trouble sometimes, but it was also one of her strengths. She didn’t sugarcoat reality, whether it was calling out a bad date, pointing out toxic behavior, or reminding her friends of uncomfortable truths.

One of her most iconic moments was when she told Carrie, “He’s just not that into you.” Brutal? Yes. Necessary? Absolutely. That tough honesty spared Carrie from wasting more time on men who weren’t serious.

5/6

Admitting fears doesn’t make you weak

Beneath Miranda’s sarcasm and independence, there was a soft, deeply vulnerable side. Miranda often acted like she had it all figured out, but underneath she was scared, scared of rejection, scared of not being lovable, scared of making the wrong choice. She admitted those fears, usually in sarcastic jokes, but they were real.

Opening up about insecurities didn’t make her less powerful; it made her human. And when she finally let her guard down with Steve, that’s when her relationship really deepened.

6/6

Love doesn’t follow a script

If Miranda taught us anything, it’s that life never lines up with the plan and there’s other lesson that Miranda’s story proved, it’s that love rarely unfolds in neat, predictable ways. She didn’t expect to end up with Steve. She didn’t picture herself becoming a mom when she did. And she certainly didn’t picture herself navigating life’s messiness the way she did. Yet that’s how it played out, and she made it work.

Dating rarely unfolds like we imagine. And sometimes the messiest, most unplanned chapters turn out to be the ones that matter most.
