All about the tradition and how the actress broke a stereotype

According to Hindu customs, we see only brothers carrying the phoolon ki chaadar or blanket of flowers above the bride’s head when she makes an entry. But Katrina Kaif who recently got married to Vicky Kaushal, broke the stereotype and had her sisters carry the same. Here’s all you need to know about this custom.

2/4

What is the phoolon ki chaadar custom?

Well phoolon ki chaadar not only gives a bride princessy feels but has some significance too. As per Hindu customs, brothers support their sister by carrying the phoolon ki chaadar above her as she walks towards the groom on her wedding day. This chaadar signifies that the bride has grown up under a lot of love and care and the walk shows that she is now leaving that protection to be with her groom, stepping into a new phase of life.

The chaadar is generally and traditionally a dupatta with flowers entwined but nowadays, the concept has been modernised and elaborated with several designs in which the flowers are arranged. It is carried by the protectors of the bride which are mostly the brothers as per custom.

There is some soft music or a statement track played when the bride enters, escorted by the brothers holding the chaadar - it looks like a very breathtaking and emotional scene.

Katrina breaking stereotypes

Katrina Kaif has been breaking many stereotypes with her wedding to Vicky Kaushal. It all began with her being 5 years elder to the groom. Even actress Kangana Ranaut cheered her on. Another move that we loved by her is the wedding custom where she had her sisters carry the protective phoolon ki chaadar. Katrina posted the image with the caption: “Growing up, we sisters always protected each other. They are my pillars of strength and we keep each other grounded… May it always stay that way!”

Indian women breaking stereotypes during Hindu weddings

Off-late, women have started stepping out of the shadow of patriarchal customs where men do the rituals.

  1. We had Dia Mirza getting married with a woman pundit carrying out all the rituals and pooja.
  2. Katrina had her sisters do the phoolon ki chaadar custom which generally the brothers and uncles are asked to do.
  3. Some women have even put down their foot on the ritual of kanyadaan as it means that the parents are giving away their daughter to the groom.
