Its official! Research reveals why GOSSIP is good for romantic, as well as professional relationships

‘Gossip’, a term that always comes with a certain judgement value added but in a recent research published by University of California, Riverside states that “Gossip, in the academic’s view, is not bad. It’s simply talking about someone who isn’t present. That talk could be positive, neutral, or negative.”Gossip is an inevitable part of human communication and social interaction. The UC Riverside study found that almost everyone gossips, spending nearly 52 minutes each day engaged in conversations about people not present. This reveals gossip as a universal behavior rather than a negative trait seen only in certain groups. It’s a natural mechanism humans use to share information, form social bonds, and figure out complex social networks. Gossip, in this sense, is neither good nor bad-it’s simply a reflection of how humans interact with each other.

‘Women gossip more’ truth or myth?

Contrary to popular belief, the study showed that women do not engage in more ‘tear-down’ gossip than men. The survey done for this research confirms that while women may gossip slightly more overall, their conversations tend to be neutral and information-sharing rather than malicious or negative. This challenges the age-old stereotype that women gossip mostly to harm others, highlighting that gossip is a form of communication used by all genders to build relationships and exchange social knowledge.

3/5

Age matters while gossiping?

The research discovered that younger people tend to engage in more negative gossip compared to older adults. However, the amount of gossiping remains similar irrespective of their age group. This suggests that while the content or tone of gossip may change with maturity, the fundamental human urge to talk about absent others remains constant throughout life. Younger individuals might express more critical views, but gossip still serves the essential social function of bonding and information exchange for all ages.

4/5

Personality and Socio economic situation gossip frequency

The same study showed that extraverts were found to gossip more frequently than introverts across all categories, indicating that personality traits influence how much people engage in gossip. Additionally, socioeconomic status and education did not predict gossip frequency, debunking myths about poorer or less educated people gossiping more than others. This insight shows gossip as a social and psychological behavior shaped more by personality and social context than by income or education.

Times when ‘Gossip’ contributed positively:

Internationally, the #MeToo movement and the emergence of 'speak up cultures' made psychologically safe spaces to discuss and exchange information a necessity;these movements have changed how gossip is understood in general. Instead of looking at gossip as the sole issue, it is now understood as an essential instrument for revealing the 'Problem behind the problem,' surfacing the underlying structural problems and well-hidden bad behavior that may otherwise go unchecked unless addressed.Other than these changes in society, studies indicate that gossip can have beneficial effects as well. Positive gossip, such as informing others of praise or positive information about coworkers, increases morale, builds trust and social bonds.
