Ways to deal with a difficult father-in-Law

Not everyone can have a perfect father-in-law as you see in some movies. But if you have a difficult father-in-law, you have to watch your words, your actions and keep in mind so many things that it can be terrifying as well. So to counter such a situation, here are a few ways which may help you deal with a difficult father-in-law.

2/5

Listen & don’t answer back

It is always helpful to be a good listener. Be calm and do not react, simply listen when he says something in aggression. Don’t let it seep in if it is something mean and hurtful. Just take in what actually might be helpful and then walk away. Don’t engage in an argument, it will get very ugly.

3/5

Understand

Sometimes, it is the situation which makes the father-in-law like that. It could be because of your aggressive mother-in-law who pokes him all the time, some financial situation at home, etc. Try to understand his side, his motive and let it go if you can.

4/5

Communication

Pent up frustration is a common trigger for bad behaviour. Try talking to your father-in-law if possible. Don’t just dive into it head on, strike a conversation about different things in life and slowly boil it down to you trying to understand what bothers him. Communication never hurts, it always helps. At least you know that you have tried and don't have any regrets, right?

5/5

Discuss with your partner

Discuss the issue with your spouse. You are feeling cornered and unfair, so confiding in the better half is always crucial. He or she can always suggest and come up with a better way of dealing with such a situation. If nothing else, he or she can even speak to their father and try to understand the route cause.
