His story/Her story: “My wife is expecting and her mood swings get very ugly”

His story: My wife is expecting. She is 6 months pregnant and I really love her. Things have been great between us but these days she suddenly gets upset and all raged about random things. Her mood swings are so extreme that they leave me shocked. I know pregancy brings about many hormonal changes and I was told about the mood swings when she conceived but there are times when she says such hurtful things in her fit of anger that it leaves me speechless. It makes me feel like she was holding up so much against me within her that has finally found an outlet. Honestly, I sometimes fear she is using pregnancy as an excuse to vent out whatever ill she feels about me. I don’t know how to handle this anymore.


Her story: I am 3 months away from my delivery date and I often have mood swings. I try my best to control them but to be honest, I really have zero control over it. I get irritable and the smallest of things annoy me at times. My husband dotes on me and he tries to keep calm, but I think I have been pushing his buttons for a while now. I have said some nasty things and I fear losing him because my words, I have realised, hit below the belt at times. I have seen the shock on his face but I feel completely helpless during these outbursts.


Expert advice by Dr Surabhi Vishnoi, Psychiatrist: We all are aware that pregnancy is a stressful period for females because of hormonal changes. Mood swings, cravings, bodily symptoms are just some difficulties in the long list. What we need to realise is that expecting fathers are also in need of emotional support. Taking a small break in the routine, say an evening with friends or playing indoor / outdoor games could help in relieving the stress.
