Selfies have enjoyed the top spot in more any social media savvy person's life for quite some time now, but as and more prestigious establishments ban selfies or selfie sticks, one is left wondering, are selfies still a cool thing? There have been innumerable instances and studies declaring how selfies are self-absorbing, narcissist and at times even fatal indulgences.
And while top institutions mull whether they should allow selfies or not, we tell you why selfies do not seem like the cool thing to do anymore.
-DISNEY PROHIBITS SELFIE STICKS If you wanted to get Mickey, Minnie, Donald and other
Disney characters in a single selfie, forget about it.Starting June 30, it is prohibited to carry selfie sticks in Disney World, Orlando, USA. While the ban was already in place for the rides, it is now applicable to the whole park following an incident in June last week, when a man fished out his selfie stick while on a roller coaster.The ride was promptly shut down and all the guests were left stranded atop the ride for over an hour. Disney banned this device that allows one to get a bigger group or more background area in a photograph, citing `health and safety' reasons. Disney's other parks, including the Paris and Hong Kong ones will also follow suit.
-YOUR EIFFEL TOWER SELFIE MAY SOON BECOME A DREAM In the coming week,European Union will decide on a legal amendment that would make it mandatory for anyone wanting to click a selfie at prominent land marks, including the Eiffel Tow er, to be able to do so only after obtaining permission from a rele vant body. Aimed at clamping down commercial photographers, it could spell doom for selfie happy people who would need prior consent to click and share such pics on social networking sites.
-IRAN BANNED SELFIES WITH WOMEN AT ASIAN CUP In January this year, during the Asian Cup, footballers, coaches and the staff of the Iranian Football team were prohibited by the head of the Iranian Football Federation's moral committee, from posing for or clicking selfies with female fans. This was done to avoid the possibility of the females using these pictures for political gains or suing players for harassment.
-SOUTH KOREA BANS SALE OF SELFIE STICKS In November 2014, the South Korean government banned uncertified selfie sticks with the understanding that these Bluetooth devices or communication equipment, cause other electronics to malfunction and are thereby a security threat. Declaring all Bluetooth devices require certification under the Wireless Telegraphy Act, the unauthorized sale and purchase of these selfie sticks attracts a fine of 30 million won.
-NO TIGER SELFIES IN NEW YORK In New York too, you can't click a selfie, hold on, if you are too close for comfort with a wild beast. The Tinder tirade saw millions of people clicking selfies for their online dating profiles with these heavily drugged animals. Considering the exploitative nature of this practice, New York became the first city to ban such an act in August last year.
-MECCA MOSQUE During the Hajj pilgrimage last October, innumerable people shared their selfies from one of the largest congregations of people on Earth.As thousands of such selfies were being shared under the hashtag #Hajj2014 daily, it upset the clerics who issued a prohibition saying that not only was this touristy but also a distraction from the prayers and rituals one was expected to indulge in during the pilgrimage.
-MENTAL ILLNESS A study published by the Ohio State University in February revealed that selfies are an indication of personality traits similar to narcissism, addiction and psychopathy. This is not the first time that such characteristics are being associated with clicking selfies or posting them on social networking sites.
