For starters, persuade your workaholic spouse not to talk about work to the exclusion of everything else. Declare a certain time of day as a no-work time. How about inviting the workaholic to do things outside of work that you know he/she will enjoy and not want to miss? If you work with a workaholic, invite them to happy hour, out to lunch or to play sports.
If you live with a workaholic, make reservations for a meal that requires a deposit or book non-refundable airline tickets.
Then, be a workout buddy with the workaholic. Remember, they often have poor health since they make no time for eating right or exercising. Becoming one may force them out of the workplace and into doing something else. In addition, do not allow the workaholic to talk about work while working out.
Encourage the workaholic to get professional help. True workaholics are actually addicted to their work and work may need to be treated like any other addiction. Your workaholic spouse may need to explore what makes them want to be a workaholic and how they got addicted to work.
You must realise that a workaholic spouse will never be happy to work regular hours. While you can help them get a better work and life balance, you cannot truly change a workaholic or their devotion to their careers.
