ChemRIZZtry to Love-loreing: Dating trends that will rule 2026

In a few weeks, we’ll be stepping into 2026. What does that mean? A new year, new adventures, and a whole new rulebook for love! Dating will be getting a major glow-up. This includes how people define their relationships and name them. The spark and connections are going to be more thrilling than ever. People are ditching rigid checklists in favour of sincerity, spontaneity, and good vibes. And whether you believe in labels or not, being familiar with these fresh dating terms will save you from looking like a total newbie in the love game.

Dating app Plenty of Fish has shared its annual list of dating trends that are going to rule 2026. These trends are based on insights from nearly 6,000 Americans who use the app. Ahead of the new year, take a sneak peek at the trends and terms that will define how we flirt, fall, and find love in 2026.

2/6

ChemRIZZtry (kem-rizz-tree)

Ever been in a situation where you felt chemistry with someone you didn’t expect it with? ChemRIZZtry is exactly that! It means “catching unexpected chemistry with someone you didn’t think you’d be into, thanks to their undeniable charisma,” according to the dating app. They noticed that one in four singles had this surprising shift. Attraction isn’t always love at first sight… sometimes it’s love at first rizz.

3/6

Love-loreing (luhv-lohr-ing)

We’ve all been there—signing up on a dating app ‘for the plot’. After all, life is all about saying yes to experiences! So, what’s wrong with applying it to dating? About a third of singles (37%) agreed that they have gone on a date just to see where the story leads. These people are chasing love through new, shared activities. We all love a plot twist in a rom-com, don’t we?

4/6

Curveball-crushing (kurv-bawl-kruh-shing)

Ever fallen for someone who is outside your usual ‘type’? You’re not alone. About 42% of singles reported experiencing this. According to the dating app, this simply proves that attraction can grow over time. This dating trend focuses on the vibes instead of the checklist.

5/6

Truecasting (troo-kas-ting)

One complaint that many people in the dating game make is that their partners change once the dating phase is over. In Truecasting, you don’t have to worry about that, because it’s all about bringing your authentic self from the very first date. No filters, no facades. Just the real you.

6/6

StAtuS-flexing (stat-us-flek-sing)

Situationships are officially out. Not believing in labels is a thing of the past now. Singles are ditching ambiguity. Whether you’re casually dating (64%), agreeing to be exclusive (30%), or full-on boyfriend/girlfriend (62%), singles today are proudly labelling their relationship status.
