Weddings in many South Asian cultures is not only considered a union between two people but also of their respective families. And so, this important event in one's life is often celebrated with much grandeur and extravagance. A recent video of one such lavish wedding has now gone viral on the internet. In the video, one can see planes showering money over homes in Hyderabad, which is in Pakistan's Sindh province and people watching in astonishment.
As per reports, the airplanes were hired to shower cash worth millions of rupees over the bride's home recently by a Pakistani groom's father. Some reports even suggest that this grand gesture by the groom's father was done to fulfil request made by the bride's father's, however this isn't confirmed. This video of money being showered over people and houses has gained a lot of attention online and received mixed reactions from netizens.
How netizens reactedWhile some people have called it a lavish gesture, others commented it to be a sheer waste of money. And a few netizens have even tried to find humours in this bizarre wedding gesture.
A user commented on the video saying, “This money could have been better spent on helping the underprivileged.” Another user commented, "Instead of throwing money from the skies, why not use it to support those in need?”
To take the concept of lavish weddings a notch higher, a groom's father in Hyderabad, Sindh, Pakistan, reportedly rented the aircraft to shower millions in cash over the bride's house. The video of a Pakistani wedding has gone viral on the internet.
While another user wrote on X (formerly Twitter), "The groom’s father rented a plane and showered cash on the bride’s house. Now it seems the groom will be repaying his father’s debts forever.” Commenting on similar lines, a user also said, “The happiest people must be the bride’s neighbors, who probably benefited the most.”
Big fat weddingsThis is not the first time that people have gone all out to celebrate a wedding by spending lavishly. Many South Asian weddings are know for their opluence and high drama. And talking of weddings, how can forget India's richest person Mukesh Ambani and Nita Ambani's youngest son Anant Ambani's three-day grand wedding that happened earlier in 2024. Anant Ambani's wedding to Radhika Merchant was a grand show of money and power, with the who's who of the world attending the grand celebration.
And it's not just the Ambanis who spend lavishly on weddings in South Asia. Some other incidents where people made the headlines for their bizarre or lavish wedding celebrations include: When the cars were once decorated with vegetables in India; or in December 2024, a video of a wedding in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, India went viral on the internet as it showed the bride's side of the family giving the groom's family a whopping INR 2.5 crore in cash! Not just this, the bride's family also have INR 11 lakhs to the groom's sister-in-laws, INR 11 lakh to the Muslim scholar who officiated the wedding ceremony, and INR 8 lakh to the mosque. Now, if this isn't a big, fat, lavish wedding, then what is?
