Ajay Jain, 44, a data analyst, has always been open to marriage but has not found the right partner yet. He is single but says that living in limbo for the past decade has made his belief in love simmer away. We asked how life has treated him till now and here is what he has shared with us.
1. Does it annoy you when people ask why you are single?
Yes and mostly because I don’t and never wanted to be single. I always wanted to have a family but I am running out on time. So when anyone asks, I feel sad.
2. Why do you think singlehood is questioned so much?
I think they have a radar that whoever seems unhappy or happy, we must ruin their day. People love giving others ‘gyaan’ anyway, irrespective of how messed up their own life is.
3. What are some of the weirdest, funniest questions you have been asked about being single?
People presume I am gay most of the time and by people I mean my own relatives. I have been seeing girls for a while now. I even met a match but things fell apart when they wanted to send their daughter with dowry and my parents refused it all. Then another time I met a beautiful woman through a dating website but she wanted to marry for the green card. So the family started thinking that besides the episodes above, I have been rejecting women because I am not straight and just trying to delay it all.
4. Did past relationship experiences play a role in your choosing singlehood? What made you realise or decide that you no longer want a partner?
No, I have not chosen singlehood but marriage seems to disagree with me. The cupid runs away from my doorstep or whatever you can say. Now I am slowly shifting away from the belief system because I am tired of waiting.
5. Any piece of advice for women and men out there who are contemplating singlehood…
I did not choose singlehood but now it has become my decision. If you want to remain single out of choice then why not? I do have a few single friends and they live life on their own terms. There are small problems they face but who does not have problems in their life? Believe in yourself and do whatever you like, be whoever you want to be.
