Amanda Bynes joins OnlyFans: Body image issues, substance abuse - a look back at her life after quitting acting
Amanda Bynes, best known for her Nickelodeon show All That, and The Amanda Show, has recently announced her debut on OnlyFans.
Once a household name, thanks to her comedic brilliance, the former child star has now shocked fans with her new announcement. "I'm on OnlyFans now!" she said in a story shared on Instagram on Monday.
The 39-year-old actress shared her excitement about joining the subscription service-based platform, which is almost synonymous with the adult entertainment industry and sexual content, however, also came with a strong disclaimer. She said that she has joined the platform to interact with her fans, and won't be posting anything sleazy. "Disclaimer: I'm doing onlyfans to chat with my fans through dm's. I won't be posting any sleazy content," she wrote. "Excited to join." The actress has set her OnlyFans subscription to $50 per month.
Amanda Bynes has lived a life full of dramatic highs and personal challenges since stepping away from the spotlight 15 years ago. Where was she after quitting acting?
Early fame and career
Amanda Bynes shot to fame in the late ’90s on Nickelodeon’s All That and her own The Amanda Show (1999–2002). Later she ventured into movies and earned popularity with films including She’s the Man (2006), Hairspray (2007), and Easy A (2010), which earned her a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination, alongside the sitcom What I Like About You (2002–2006). By age 17, she was named to the Forbes Celebrity 100 list.
Body image issues, and quitting the film career
Despite her popularity, Bynes struggled with body image issues, and substance abuse in her early 20s. She told the Paper magazine that her insecurities over her image began after starring in She’s the Man, where she played a teenage girl pretending to be her twin brother. She revealed that the film pushed her into a ‘deep depression’, and later led to substance abuse by taking a drug, that some women took to look thin.
What is substance abuse?
Substance abuse refers to the harmful or hazardous use of psychoactive substances. This includes alcohol and illicit drugs. Illicit drug use has negative health consequences. This also puts a heavy financial burden on individuals, families, and society.
This has negative consequences on physical and mental health. It also causes social problems.
Common substances involved in abuse include:
Amanda Bynes breaking point came with Easy A, in which she starred alongside Emma Stone. Bynes said that she ‘couldn’t stand’ her appearance in it. “I didn’t like my performance. I was absolutely convinced I needed to stop acting after seeing it" she said.
The combination of body image issues and substance use led her to walk away from Hollywood at just 24 years old.
The following years weren't easy either. Between 2012 and 2014, Bynes had multiple run-ins with the law, including DUI and hit-and-run incidents. Later she started displaying odd behaviour and allegedly started a small fire in a stranger's driveway. The incident resulted in Bynes's admission to a hospital for a 72-hour involuntary psychiatric hold. Following that, his parents applied for a conservatorship, noting that she was paranoid and a danger to herself. She remained under the conservatorship for nine years, and in Feb. 2022 she filed for a termination, as her health and well-being improved. Her parents too agreed.
Meanwhile, after the conservatorship, she was supposed to reunite with her All That co-stars in Mar. 2023, however, she didn't show up, citing undisclosed health issues. She briefly launched a podcast in late 2023, though it was paused after one episode. In Oct. 2024, she teamed up with designer Asspizza (Austin Babbitt) on a limited fashion collection featuring her artwork, and the pieces quickly sold out.
