7 things sex education should have taught us but didn’t

7 things sex education should have taught us but didn’t

Sex education is a part of the school curriculum all over the world. Young minds need to be educated about adulthood at an early age in order to sensitize and educate them. However, sometimes school-level sex education is not enough since it is only theoretical. It doesn’t help us when we step into the outside world after finishing school. Here is a look at 7 things sex education should have taught us but didn’t.

2/8

How to respect personal boundaries

A huge component of sex is personal boundaries. Kids should be taught that there is nothing shameful about saying "yes" or "no" and that they should not be ashamed nor shame someone else for saying so. This is regardless of gender or orientation.

3/8

Penetration is not the only definition of sex

Thinking that a penis entering a vagina is the only definition of sex is completely hetero-normative because it doesn't include lesbian or gay couples. Moreover, this definition is limiting even for straight couples since it focuses on the process of reproduction and totally leaves out sex for pleasure.

4/8

Different sexual orientations are natural

Homosexuality is natural and there is nothing immoral about it or experimenting with it. Bi-curiosity and gender experimentation are common urges in both genders. It doesn’t make anyone weird or socially unacceptable.

5/8

Porn is not a realistic portrayal of sex

Sex in real life is not nearly as smooth and effortless as porn portrays. In reality, there is a lot of bumping, talking, and weirdness. Porn gives the wrong idea of sex, raising expectations to fictional and unreal standards.

6/8

Orgasms are complicated for women

We aren’t taught that orgasms for women are complex. Although there are certainly some women who can orgasm through penetration alone, for others, it takes much more.

7/8

Sexual orientation and gender orientation are different

Sexual orientation is who you are attracted to. On the other hand, gender orientation is the gender you personally identify as. ‘Female’ is an example of gender orientation. Regardless of the sex someone is born, their gender identity is something they identify themselves.

8/8

Sex should be about mutual pleasure

This is something that all young adults could stand to learn as they begin to explore their sexuality. Sex should always be about mutual pleasure, not just one person's, and you shouldn't be afraid to speak up if something is not working for you in bed.
