5 couples share how their marriage survived rough times

Marriages take work, commitment and most above of all, understanding. It’s not easy to move past differences, traumas and rough patches in life without the ardent support of your partner. But, even at times, marital partners are put to the test where they have to withstand the hard complexities of life together. Hence, we bring to you 5 couples who share how their marriage survived many difficulties with the help of lifelong trust and love.

Losing a child

“We lost our five-year-old daughter in an accident. We both survived but she succumbed to her grave injuries. My wife and I didn’t speak to each other for almost a year; we went on with our jobs and work but failed to even acknowledge the situation. My wife looked lifeless and soon enough she went into depression where she cried every night after coming home from work. Our child’s death hit us too deeply. But, by the end of another five years, we were blessed with another child. And this had finally given us the strength to hold onto our marriage.”

Facing unemployment

“My husband had lost his job which started to play with his confidence and self-esteem issues. He had become lazy and depended entirely on me to run the household. He had started drinking late at nights and it made me really frustrated. He would never speak to me about how he was feeling and I felt our marriage was on the rocks. But a year and a half later, he got another job. That’s when he slowly started to get better. He apologised for his miserable behaviour and we have been working on our communication skills since then. Sometimes, all it takes is some patience. I’m glad I waited.”

Exposure of infidelity

“I caught my wife cheating on me with one of her colleagues. It completely broke my trust in her and I wasn't sure of our marriage anymore. My wife was remorseful and she tried every possible way to gain my trust back. Her efforts were immense and slowly we started reconnecting again. It was devastating and difficult, but I was able to forgive her and since then I understood that forgiving can truly save a marriage with love and understanding.”

Long-distance troubles

“My husband had to move to Australia for a year, just after a year of our marriage. We knew it was going to be hard but it was so much more. The endless nights of not being together, being in different time zones were exceptionally difficult. We had stopped talking completely and called once or twice a week just to know about each other and the family stuff. But when he came back, the feeling of lost love was immense. We truly felt happy upon embracing each other because somehow between timezones, we had lost each other as a couple.”

Family disputes

“We were having a tough time in our marriage as daily family disputes in my in-law’s home were taking a toll. My mother-in-law forced my husband to take her side during fights and it drove me crazy. We honestly weren’t much upfront with each other but I could see myself sinking to the bottom, upon encountering this daily. But soon, my husband suggested moving to an independent house to start our own family. And I hadn’t been more relieved to hear that!”
