Modern relationships and problems

Considering the fast-paced lives we live, modern relationships too have evolved and become more complex. From infidelity and cheating to pressures of being perfect on social media, here we list down the five most common problems faced by Gen Z in their relationships.

2/6

Infidelity and cheating

In the digital era, everyone has easy access to various dating apps, social media, and other platforms to connect. This may sound good in a way, but it poses a big potential threat to people in relationships. Seeing the opportunities and the easy access, people might feel tempted to cheat on their partner which increases the chance of self-sabotage, broken trust, betrayal, and emotional damage and trauma. Cheating is one of the most common problems faced by Gen Z in relationships. The dishonesty and cheating may lead to severe damage to self-esteem and may even lead to self-harm in many cases.

3/6

Overthinking and lack of confidence

Many people today suffer from overthinking, anxiety, and a severe lack of self-confidence. They tend to overanalyze every minor detail, leading to great suffering. People who suffer from overthinking may feel immensely insecure in relationships, which ultimately leads to confusion and conflicts between them and their partners. The self-doubt and lack of confidence can reach a very high degree where a person may feel overwhelmed and anxious to a level where their mood changes based on how well or poorly their relationship is going, and all of this leads to mental and even physical health issues. Overthinking makes it difficult for a person to trust their partner or even communicate effectively. This is a major relationship problem faced by today’s generation and it ultimately affects their whole relationship and life.

4/6

Expecting instant response from your partner

In the fast-paced world that we live in today, everything is available at the click of a button. From calling and connecting with your partner to finding solutions to your relationship issues online. While this might be a good thing, in certain situations this can also adversely affect your relationship. If a partner is busy or if they don't respond instantly, it could lead the other person to feel anxious or neglected-- while this might not be the case. There is only one solution to this problem, which is open and honest communication between partners about their needs and boundaries.

5/6

Open relationships

An open relationship is an arrangement between partners where they agree that they are allowed to engage in romantic relationships with other people outside of their relationship. There can be different rules and boundaries of an open relationship, which may vary based on their preferences. Open relationships depend upon mutual understanding, level of communication, and trust between partners. This agreement may work tremendously well with some people and may have a poor end for others. This concept challenges traditional relationships and questions commitment and emotional attachment. People often get into open relationships with a mindset of ‘exploration’, believing they can handle their insecurities and emotions, but it often leads to heartbreak and feelings of guilt, anger, loneliness, and resentment towards their partner.

6/6

Peer pressure and social media

Peer pressure and social media is a common cause of problems in modern relationships. It can lead to severe destruction of relationships. Gen Z’s reliance on social media and the chase of external validation leads to unhealthy competition, unrealistic expectations, jealousy, and envy in relationships. The generation chases that ‘ideal’ and ‘perfect’ relationship, which ultimately leads to resentment when their partner cannot meet their unrealistic standards and expectations. It may harm their relationship by causing dissatisfaction, tension, and conflicts, and leading to the end of the relationship.
