From 69 BC until today, some women have played crucial role in shaping our world. They fought against all odds, battled the patriarchal mindsets and gave a major showdown to sexists who thought that women serve the purpose of only populating the world. Here is a list of 12 most powerful women in world history that we hope you knew about.

Zenobia (240-275)

She was the queen of the Palmyrene Empire in Syria who had challenged the authority of the Roman Empire in the 3rd century. She had even conquered Lebanon, Egypt, Anatolia and Roman Judea.

Cleopatra (69-30 BC)

She was the last Pharaoh of Ptolemaic Egypt. She was well known for her intelligence and her contribution in improving the country’s status and economy.

Rani Lakshmibai (1828-1858)

The Rani of Jhansi or the queen of Jhansi was one of the leaders of the Indian rebellion of 1857 which is also known as India’s First War of Independence to fight the British Rule. She is also known as the Indian Joan of Arc.

Joan of Arc (1412-1431)

She was the French heroine and also a saint for the Roman Catholics. She rallied French troops to defeat the English in the Battle of Orleans and also claimed to have mystical visions. However, she was eventually betrayed and burned at the stake.

Borte Ujin (1161-1230)

She was the wife of Genghis Khan, the empress of the Mongolian Empire. She was Khan’s most trusted advisor and would rule Mongolia while Khan was away at war.

Indira Gandhi (1917-1984)

She was the first female Prime Minister of India who served 4 terms from 1996 to 1984 until she was assassinated by her Sikh Bodyguards. She was a powerful figure although marred by a lot of controversies. She also won the war against Pakistan which resulted in Bangladesh's creation.

Margaret Thatcher (1925-2013)

She was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990 and was also the first woman to hold the office. She served the longest as a British in the 20th century. She was also called the Iron Lady by the Soviets.

Theodora (500-548)

She was an influential Empress of the Byzantine Empire and was married to Emperor Justinian I. She was his most trusted advisor and she used him to achieve her own purposes. She is known to have fought for the rights of women, passed anti-trafficking laws and also improved divorce proceedings.

Queen Victoria (1819-1901)

She was the Queen of the United Kingdom who ruled the British Empire for 63 years. This was the time when she had 6 continents under her. She holds the second longest reign record because the reigning Queen Elizabeth II has surpassed her. Her rule was so impactful that the period is called the Victorian Era. Abolishment of slavery to granting voting rights, reforming labor conditions and other cultural, political and miltary changes came under rule.

Empress Dowager Cixi (1835-1908)

She was the Chinese Emperor’s mother and regent who ruled China for almost 50 years until 1908. She brought in military and technological reforms, supported anti-Western attitudes and even included the Boxer Rebellion of 1899-1901.

Hatshepsut (1508 BC - 1458 BC)

She was an Ancient Egyptian pharaoh who oversaw the building of military campaigns in Syria, Nubia and Levant and she even rebuilt broken trade networks.

Empress Wu Zetian (624-705)

She was the only female Emperor in Chinese history. She lived during the Tang Dynasty. She expanded the Chinese empire, brought in education reform and economic prosperity. She was a patron of Buddhism.

This article says Joan of Arc was betrayed. A number of historians have debunked that: there's no evidence that Charles VII betrayed her (his army seems to have conducted at least four rescue attempts).
