How Meghan Markel triggered serious Royal Palace concerns and what actually led her think she became a 'Second rate Princess': Book reveals shocking facts
When American actress Meghan Markle got engaged to the UK's Prince Harry, she thought she would have a real-life fairytale and live in Windsor Castle. But reality was much later. According to royal biographer Tom Quinn, Meghan was shocked when she and Harry were given Nottingham Cottage to live in after getting married. For the unversed, Nottingham Cottage is a modest little place on the grounds of Kensington Palace and it wasn't exactly the royal palace Meghan had imagined she would live in!
Apart from this, another dream that came crashing down for Meghan was when she realised she would be told what to do by the Institution. Quinn puts it bluntly in his book 'Gilded Youth', as per Daily Mail UK, 'Never in royal history had someone’s expectations clashed so dramatically with reality. Meghan, who came from a world where she was used to making her own choices, suddenly found herself in a rigid institution that told her where to go, what to say, and even what to wear'.
And let’s not forget, Meghan wasn’t just dazzled by the fame— she expected the glamour of being “the princess.” But soon, she realised she would always come second to Kate Middleton, the author further shared. Just like Harry resented being the “spare” to Prince William, Meghan reportedly hated feeling like a “second-rate Princess.”
Worse, she had to follow endless protocols that felt, in her words, “pointless.” In fact, years after leaving the UK and her duties as a senior member of the Royal family, Meghan said in an interview with Bloomberg’s Emily Chang, “I couldn’t be as vocal (when living with the UK Royals)… and I had to wear nude pantyhose all the time!” She laughed it off, but the message was clear— life in the palace felt inauthentic to her.
Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, had already given up plenty to join “the Firm.” Her lifestyle blog The Tig— which showcased her love for cooking, travel, and wellness— was shut down in 2017, just before her engagement to Prince Harry. For someone who always felt in control of her destiny, palace life was a shock. Staffers, Royal biographer Quinn claims, treated her condescendingly because she wasn’t “a blood royal.” Kate endured the same chilly treatment but managed with charm and patience. Meghan, on the other hand, tried to push back— and reportedly even attempted to outshine Queen Elizabeth II back then.
And that’s where panic set in the Palace. Quinn’s later book 'Yes Ma’am' reveals that palace officials grew worried when Meghan signaled she wanted to operate independently from the Queen’s carefully controlled strategy. Her desire to “do her own thing” may have been perfectly natural for a Hollywood star, but it clashed with centuries of royal tradition. Outshining Anne, Charles, or Elizabeth? Unimaginable!
Meanwhile, tension grew between the brothers, William and Harry, as they seemed to be on “different paths,” as Harry once mentioned. Meghan, too, according to Valentine Low’s 'Courtiers', dreamed of monetising her royal title, which eventually fueled “Megxit” in 2020. But right before officially stepping down from their royal duties, Harry and Meghan were given the option of being part-time royals, with occasional duties— but the Sussexes weren’t willing to play by the “no personal profit” rule.
And that's what Meghan has done ever since leaving her Royal duties in the UK. She is back in her element in the US, rebranding and relaunching her lifestyle 'As Ever', reconnecting with her roots in cooking, gardening, and crafting.
From palace protocol to personal brand, Meghan Markle’s journey shows us one thing: the Hollywood starlet never really fit into the royal mold. And it seems she doesn’t seem to miss it.
