Giving up too easily: If you sent a message and didn't get a reply , pick yourself up and try again. There are thousands of singles on online dating sites and hundreds more keep coming every day. Persistence will pay off, so keep at it and don't give up prematurely. However, be sure not to pester someone who isn't interested. Carlton Menezes, a marketing professional, who has a lot of experience with online dating, feels that two tries, either through a message or poke is the limit. "At times, someone whom you're trying to chat with, could forget the interaction. So, trying again is okay . But if you don't get any response or they stop cold turkey , it's best to move on." Exaggerating lying on your profile: Avoid lying on your profile at all costs. Chances are, if you're caught, you will be blocked from the site. It's okay to leave the divorced question blank, but if you're asked about it, be honest. Rahul Kumar, founder of a dating app, says they restrict and even delete profiles of people whom they know are lying online. "There are people who are married and they try to make a dating profile. We don't allow them on our site. In fact, we ask for social media profiles, so that our team can do the verifications in the first place to have genuine folks around." Taking things too quickly: This is common with guys on the web. Allow at least a fortnight of continuous messaging before suggesting to meet up. Maya Singh, a 32-year-old HR professional, who has experience with dating online feels that most times, men are too quick online."90% of the time, guys want to meet right away . In fact, I remember chatting with a guy , who I felt was quite decent, said he wanted to meet me for coffee on the same day , just an hour after I chatted with him!" She exclaims, adding that the pace differs from person to person. "Some of my friends, who are on a dating site, don't mind meeting the guy soon, but I'd rather know the person better." Talking about money: When talking to a prospective match online, money should not come up at all. If you are asked about anything personal or money-related, stay safe and treat the person as suspicious. If it continues, report them.Likewise, continuous bragging about how loaded you are isn't cool. (Thinkstock Photos/ Getty Images)

Selfies and 'look at my bod' pics: Profiles with missing pictures look dodgy and are treated as suspicious by other users. `Look at my hot body' pictures may also attract the wrong crowd -especially if you're looking for an actual relationship on cyberspace. Likewise, too many selfies can make you look boring and self-absorbed. It's good to have a mix of happy pictures on your profile. (Thinkstock Photos/ Getty Images)
