Six life-saving tips for pregnant moms who are flying

Some women think travelling, especially flying is completely okay when they are pregnant but that's not the case. Though yes, in most cases if you and your baby are healthy and not around 36 weeks, you can safely fly. But pregnant women need to take care and special precautions while doing so as it’s not just you getting into that airplane but your baby too.

Here is a list of six life-saving tips that pregnant women must keep in mind before flying:

2/7

Do not travel internationally

Obviously, international flights are longer than domestic ones. Plus, if you go into labour in the plane, language can be a barrier for you to deal with. There can be citizenship issues as well. For example, your child will be given the citizenship of the country where he/she will born but it might require you to deposit some extra papers, which you really don’t want to get messed up with at this time.

3/7

Check with your doctor and get his approval

If you are past 28 weeks, most airlines require you to give a written doctor’s permission. This is done to lower the number of deliveries and complications that happen in the flight.

Every woman experiences pregnancy differently and thus it’s important to check with your doctor before you plan to take a flight.

4/7

Travel wearing layers

Everyone’s body reacts differently to the airplane temperature – some might feel hot while others might feel cold. It’s best to wear layers so that you can take off one when you want and put on one of you need.

5/7

Do not overpack

Unless you are travelling with your friends or family who are willing to help you carry the luggage, do not pack too much. After all, checking in, finding the terminal and then boarding the plane will need a lot of walking, which can definitely be easy if you are travelling light.

Lifting heavy suitcases can put unnecessary pressure on you and your baby.

6/7

Prepare for nausea

Do not travel during your first trimester as it’s during this time that morning sickness is at its peak. But the airplane turbulence can make you feel nauseous even if you have completed the first trimester.

One easy way to deal with it is by having mint tea. Make sure to carry your own sachet.

7/7

Choose the aisle seat

Unless you are travelling in first class, the chances are that you will be uncomfortable with that baby bump. The best way to deal with this is by choosing the aisle seat.

This way you will a little extra space on the side and the access to the toilet will be easy.
