Nearing your delivery date? Is C-section better than a vaginal birth?

Are Caesarean deliveries gaining popularity?

Caesarean delivery (C-section) has been a prevalent method of delivering babies, mainly due to various factors that could impact the health and well-being of the mother and baby. However, despite its growing popularity, there are still a lot of misconceptions related to caesarean delivery, particularly Lower Segment Caesarean Section or LSCS. It has also been found that many people still believe that normal vaginal delivery is considered superior to LSCS. Due to this, a lot of new mothers face criticism from their families when they opt for a C-section.

What’s the cause of this taboo?

“When it comes to C-sections, it is essential to understand that a woman who chooses to have a non-vaginal delivery is as strong physically and mentally. However, due to unforeseen situations, a C-section is considered more viable as it can help ensure that there are no unwanted scenarios for the mother or child. Eventually, the mode of delivery is usually decided by the doctor as per the condition of the baby and the mother.

3/6

Should you opt for C-section readily?

Another critical factor for many women choosing to go through a C-section is that they do not want to go through the normal labor process. While making such a decision, the mother needs to understand the process along with its benefits and disadvantages. Although C-section deliveries are a common type of surgery, it is still a major surgery and should not be approached lightly,” says Dr Manjiri Mehta, Consultant Gynaecologist & Obstetrician, Hiranandani Hospital Vashi-A Fortis Network Hospital.

Advantages of a planned C-section

• Since a C-section is a planned surgery, the mother knows precisely when she is going to have a baby

• The logistics of the admission process, travel from home to hospitals, and other arrangements can be taken care of seamlessly

• There is a distinct advantage in a planned LSCS as all the supporting staff are present at the delivery time. For example, a baby needing a Neonatologist or a mother requiring a blood transfusion are situations where the hospital staff can be prepared before the time

• For women who do not want to go through the pain and uncertainty of labor, C-section delivery is a great option.

5/6

When opting for C-section, understand this

C-section has its own disadvantages as well so that every pregnant woman can make the choice that suits them the best. Some common issues related to C-sections include:

• Anesthesia related issues

• Need of excess painkiller at least during the first 48 hours

• The amount of blood loss during the surgery is likely to be more than in a normal delivery

• There is a potential risk of infection, including urinary disease, due to catheterization

• The recovery period is more than that of a normal delivery. Though you don’t need to be bedridden, you can’t resume your routine for up to 2 weeks

6/6

The takeaway

Each delivery form has its benefits and drawbacks. As each woman's pregnancy journey is different, the type of delivery they choose should be after a detailed discussion with their Gynecologist & Obstetrician. After all, an educated decision is the best way forward in this scenario.
