Zooey Deschanel talks about motherhood, reveals how she shields her children from her own insecurities
American actress Zooey Deschanel has also shared her candid views on parenting, stating that she is mindful of not passing her own self-doubts on to her children, as a result of which they meet the world with confidence.
In a recent talk about motherhood, in 'Call Her Daddy', poplar podcast by Alex Cooper, the actress from the popular series New Girl revealed how she is a mother of Elsie and Charlie. Deschanel stated, “Kids often get their sense of self-worth from Mom and Dad. It's crucial for parents to convey a message of confidence and emotional strength, even when dealing with feelings of inadequacy.”
Deschanel shared that she was bullied as a child, and this had a significant effect on her perception of self-esteem and vulnerability. As a result, she is very mindful of how she talks about herself around her children. She feels that hearing a parent's expressions of self-doubt or dissatisfaction with life may inadvertently affect how children perceive themselves.
“My aim is to have my kids believe that I am satisfied with the person I am,” she said, adding that kids usually have a tendency to imitate the emotional state of the home environment they are brought up in. The actress’s trick is to not let the feeling of insecurity totally rule the home space despite being imperfect.
With a industry that has a very strong fixation on looks and youth, what Deschanel had to say regarding the disregard for the conventions of beauty was quite significant. She has already clarified that self-confidence has to come not from one’s appearance, which anyway is temporary and subjective, but rather from creativity, individuality, and self-acceptance.
In addition to her modeling confidence, Deschanel values having open dialogue with her children about the tough issues that affect kids, such as bullying and peer pressure. Rather than ignoring the negatives of these situations, Deschanel wants her children to express their emotions and give them the tools to react positively.
The actress has emphasized the need to be there in her children’s lives, no matter how busy her schedule is. Although being busy might mean that a child may not spend much time with her mother, Deschanel ensures that she is there to mark significant events in her children’s lives. In her opinion, this helps a child leave a mark in her books and helps her understand how much her mother values her.
Deschanel’s point of view mirrors the changing tide in parenting today, which emphasizes the emotional well-being of the child instead of striving for perfection. Many parents today, including celebrities, are involved in raising emotionally resilient children. As Zooey finds a way to balance her acting career with her life as a mother, her message is meant to be clear: to be confident, you must first be confident at home. Zooey is attempting to project a positive image to her children in an attempt to help them be well-adjusted, confident young people in the future.
