Things parents should know about their child's temper tantrums

Out of several behavioral patterns of a kid, tantrums are one of the most annoying and disappointing ones. Temper tantrums are emotional outbursts that are disruptive, to say the least. A lot of parents might be familiar with the unsettling experience of finding their child calm one minute and creating a whole lot of hue and cry at the slightest disturbance or simple provocation. In such cases, the outburst is quite anticipated and most parents try to make amends even before the problem starts. However, the worst part is that they have no idea of what the problem is. Here are five tips for parents to deal with the child’s temper tantrums. Instead of what you should do, here are certain things that you shouldn’t do because it only worsens your child’s behavior.

2/5

Reasoning

When you see your child throwing a great tantrum, you would obviously try to reason with it. Being an adult, it is easier to ascertain that the situation does not demand the reaction that your child is giving it. However, it is important to remember that your child is not able to reason in the middle of a tantrum because its emotions are weighing heavy on it. Instead of trying to reason, removing yourself from its vicinity is a good solution. Ask it to either deep breathe or do something that soothes the mind like singing.

Don’t lose your temper

It might seem next to impossible to maintain your calm while your child is throwing a full-fledged tantrum but it is the only way out. Scolding or beating will only worsen the situation. At this time, it is important to remember that your child is using this tactic to get its way and it is fully aware of it. By scolding, you show your disapproval for its actions, which gives it a huge hit of power and a sure shot way to garner your attention in the future.

4/5

Do not give in

Giving in to your child’s demands after being persistent only gives out one message, that is, if they stick to their demands, they will be fulfilled. Even though there will be times when you would feel like giving in so that you can simply put yourself and your mind at rest, make sure that you remain firm so that you don’t have to deal with the same behavior next time.

5/5

Bribing

Some situations might embarrass you and desperation might compel you to bribe your child in order to get the situation in control. However, it is not advisable to do so because this will lead it into believing that a tantrum can help in getting a treat in the future and this will encourage the behavior.
