Here's how new moms can fix their sleep schedule

As new moms have an erratic sleep schedule, they can be severely sleep deprived. There are health hazards due to sleep deprivation, including long-term health conditions like depression, high blood pressure, kidney disease, and heart disease. Insufficient sleep in adults increases their risk of accidents and injuries, which makes them dangerous around infants. Lack of sleep can cause stress, which can control unpleasant emotions, which can have a poor impact on parenting. Sleep deprivation can cause a reduction in productivity, slowed reaction times and lead to daytime sleepiness and fatigue.
Dr. Sibasish Dey, Head of Medical Affairs, South Asia, ResMed says, “Understanding which strategies work effectively for both yourself and the child is crucial since prioritising a good night's sleep gives you the stamina to care for the new addition to your family. Compared to adults, infants have shorter sleep cycles.”
For new parents, the following aspects of good sleep hygiene are particularly crucial:

2/6

Sleeping with the baby

Sleeping whenever the baby is sleeping isn’t easy because you have many more chores and adults duties. However, cuddling and catching some Zz’s with the baby is one of the best healing practices for new moms. This helps reduce the stress levels in new mothers.

3/6

Feeling comfortable declining invitations

As a new mother, your amount of responsibilities have increased and your social life may not be as attractive to you anymore. Do not push yourself to go anywhere and do not feel guilty in avoiding visitors to develop a routine.

4/6

Set up a good routine

According to Dr. Dey, “A peaceful sleeping environment and consistent night-time routine that promotes restfulness at night and maintaining a comfortable, healthy sleep environment is essential for a new mother.”

5/6

Balance the responsibilities

As bringing the child into this world is a mutual decision, it is the responsibility of both parents to care for the child, without the burden falling on one parent.

6/6

Employing relaxation techniques

“Try to catch up on meditation and breathing exercises and small walking routines. This can help new moms unwind and improve their sleep habits.
While taking good care of oneself can be challenging once you are caring for a newborn, getting enough sleep also needs to be of the utmost importance. One can get the sleep required after a baby is born, by implementing good sleeping habits. In the weeks and months following the baby's birth, talk to your doctor if you have trouble sleeping. The full scope of your healthcare requirements can be determined by your doctor,” says Dr. Dey.
