Teaching kids: Who is a stranger? Understanding safe vs. unsafe people

You must have told this several times to your child. But what does that really mean? Is your child properly understanding what or who a stranger is? Are all strangers bad? Should you run away from every person you don’t know? Let’s talk about it in a simple and smart way!
Kids should feel confident, not scared.

A stranger is just someone you don’t know well
That’s it. Easy, right?
It could be:A person walking their dog Someone in a store A person asking for directions
Most strangers are good people! They have kids, pets, jobs, favorite snacks… they’re regular humans. But the tricky part is: we can’t tell if a stranger is safe or unsafe just by looking at them.
So instead of thinking “stranger = bad,” think “stranger = someone I need to be cautious around.”

Safe strangers are people who can help you in emergencies.
Usually, they have uniforms or work in busy public places:
Police Officers
Firefighters
Paramedics
Teachers
Store workers with name badges
Hospital staff
Librarians
These people have jobs that involve helping others.
But hey — if you ever feel unsure, trust your gut feeling. If someone looks official but makes you uncomfortable, find someone else.

Unsafe strangers might:

Ask you to keep secrets Offer gifts, candy, toys (tempting, but nope!)Ask you to go somewhere with them Pretend they need help from a kid Make you feel confused or scared

If someone does or says something that:
Makes you feel uncomfortable
Makes your tummy twist
Makes you want to move away fast
Listen to your feelings! They’re warning you.
That feeling is called your body alarm — and your body alarm is always on your team.

Let’s make safety easy and strong. Say these out loud with me:
“My body belongs to me.”“Safe grown-ups don’t ask kids for help.”“I don’t go anywhere with anyone unless my adults say YES.”“I don’t keep unsafe secrets.”“If I feel weird, I walk away and tell a trusted adult.”
These rules make you a safety superhero.

Strangers don’t only exist on the street. They can also be:In games
On chats
On social media
If someone online:
Asks where you live
Wants pictures
Says “Don’t tell your parents”
Wants to meet in person
You block and tell a trusted adult ASAP.

Say NO loudly
GO away fast
YELL for help
TELL a trusted adult
Practice it like a game — the stronger and louder, the better!
Examples of what you can shout:
“I DON’T KNOW YOU!”
“HELP! STRANGER!”
“LET ME GO!”
People will look, and that’s the point — attention scares unsafe strangers away.
