Signs your child needs more discipline, less pampering

How to tell if your child is undisciplined?

When it comes to parenting, no parent wants to raise undisciplined, ill-mannered children. But sometimes, with all the pampering and overindulgence, it becomes unavoidable. Often parents fail to see the red flags, which in turn encourages children to carry on the misbehavior. This continuous pattern makes your child out of control and difficult to handle. Who do we blame then?

The best approach is to identify the subtle signs of indiscipline in children and take steps to curb it. Read on to find out what they are.

Your child does not understand kindness, empathy and compassion

Having compassion and empathy is a mark of a humble, disciplined human being, who respects and takes into account people's emotions and feelings. If you notice that your child lacks that, it is probably because they're more concerned about their own interests and well-being, which is okay. But if their happiness comes at the cost of other people being hurt and disrespected, then it is time to check them and make some amends.

3/6

When they act entitled

Being privileged is one thing, but acting entitled is another. You have no control over the former, but the latter just needs a personality change. If your child acts as though they have the right to everything you own, and behave as though they have the license to be disrespectful to others, to look down on others because they're more privileged, it's time to bring about a storm of changes.

4/6

Do they have a problem with the word 'no'?

Kids who are entitled, pampered and spoiled often cannot take 'no' for an answer. They can't bear it when they're denied certain privileges and amenities. So, if your child cannot take 'no' for an answer, and acts up when they're restricted from certain activities, then it could be a sign that they need more discipline than pampering.

5/6

They never feel bad for their mistakes and faults

Most often, undisciplined kids expect bribes or rewards for good behavior, because it is only rarely that they lift their fingers to help. But when it comes to committing mistakes and owning up to it, they're the last to do so. They always expect to be rescued from their mistakes, deny their fault and are sometimes even oblivious to their situation.

6/6

Their blame-game is quite strong!

Another thing spoiled children are great at doing is passing on the blame to others when they know they have made the wrong choices. They're unapologetic and not even guilty for the mistakes they commit. So if they're not ready to take responsibility for their actions, there's no way they understand the difference between the good and the bad.

These are times parents must intervene and take some tough calls. Spoiling your child under the guise of care and love will only hamper their abilities when they grow up. You must aim to raise responsible, honest and compassionate children, who are emotionally intelligent and respectful of others' opinion and emotions.
