Parents need to be alert

Parents have a mammoth role to play when it comes to raising kids from demonstrating love and care. They need to be vigilant as well in the process of bringing up their children. When children grow up it becomes more challenging for them to know what they are thinking and feeling.

A proper, non-judgmental support and care is required by the parents if their children show signs of wrecked mental health.

When do children nurture suicidal tendencies?

A child might feel suicidal in the following situations:

1.Mental disorders such as depression or bipolar disorder.

2.Threats, bullying or violence from friends.

3.A family history of suicide.

4.History of physical or emotional abuse.

5. Struggling with their gender identity or sexuality in an unsupportive family or community.

6.Feelings of irritability, distress and failure.

7.Feelings of hopelessness due to depression.

8.Online harassment.

Warning signs of suicide

Usually, children show symptoms of committing suicide after a stressful episode in life, such as problems at school, a breakup with a boyfriend or a girlfriend, death of a loved one or any other major family conflict. They might talk about suicide or death in general. Lose interest in carrying out their favorite activities, change their eating or sleeping pattern, lose interest in school or sports or engage in risk-taking behaviors. They might also start distributing their treasured possessions to others and stop interacting with people around them.

What can parents do?

Some parents feel that kids who threaten to kill themselves are doing it for attention. It is important to realize that if the kids are ignored at this stage, it might increase the chance of harming themselves more. As parents, proper action should be taken to help a troubled kid.

1.Have a close watch on who show signs of depression or are withdrawn. Listen to them seriously if they confide in you.

2.Make them feel comfortable while they share their problems with you. For example, a fight with a friend might not sound big to you as a parent but it might be a cause of immense worry to your child.

3.Parents should respond with empathy and understanding when a child talks about suicide.

4.Get proper professional help if you smell an immediate crisis.

5.Remove all the lethal tools and substances from home.

6.Medications, talk therapy, yoga and meditation can bring hope in the life of a disturbed child.

7.Encourage such children to participate in social gatherings and interact with family and friends.
