Suze Lopez, a 41-year-old nurse who lives in Bakersfield, California underwent a rare pregnancy that, a pregnancy so dangerous that doctors planned to journal it. Suze’s baby boy named Ryu was developed outside his mom’s womb. He was hidden by a basketball-ovarian cyst.
Before the little boy was born, Suze wasn’t even aware that she was pregnant with her second child before giving birth.
10 early signs of pregnancy
A report in Associated Press had Dr. John Ozimek, medical director of labor and delivery at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles, where Ryu was born, say, “It is essentially unheard of — far, far less than 1 in a million. I mean, this is really insane.”
While Suze thought her ovarian cyst was growing bigger, it was actually the baby. She also didn’t have any usual pregnancy symptoms. It was also because, her periods were irregular and sometimes she wouldn’t have for years because of the cyst.
Suze and her husband Andrew Lopez are avid travellers. With Suze’s pain increasing, she decided to get the cyst remove and that’s when the couple realized they are pregnant.
However, Suze’s pregnancy was extremely dangerous with her BP being high and doctors found her uterus is empty in the scan reports.
Dr. Cara Heuser, a maternal-fetal specialist in Utah not involved with the case, said such pregnancies that implant outside the uterus are called ectopic pregnancies. Chances of fetal mortality can be as high as 90% in such cases and birth defects are seen in about 1 in 5 surviving babies.
But in this case, Suze’s boy beat all the odds and welcomed his on August 18, 2025. The doctors also removed the cyst in the same surgery. Though she lost nearly all blood, the team got it under control and gave her transfusions.
Andrew felt scared thinking he would lose either his wife or child. But however, both recovered well. The family celebrated Christmas together and Suze said, “I do believe in miracles. God gave us this gift — the best gift ever.”
