Raksha Bandhan Significance
Raksha means protection or to protect and Bandhan means bond or to tie or knot. In some of the oldest myths the ritual of tying a thread was not just between siblings but between any two parties as a promise of protection. It's easy to see how this sentiment corresponds to siblings and how this festival came to be.
The rakhi thread is often the traditional red moly, sometimes with some gold thread woven in. Now rakhis are as diverse as friendship bands, due to commercialism. Some brothers keep rakhis on til they fall of naturally and some take them off that very night. It's best to buy rakhi's that are biodegradable for many now have plastic beads at the very least.
It is a very family centric holiday, with generations of siblings taking time out to meet each other and spend time together.
