Father Dies Saving Children From Rip Current During Florida Vacation
In an incident reported by the People.com, a family vacation at the beach in Florida turned out to be a tragic event when a father lost his life in an attempt to save his children who were caught up in a powerful ocean current.
Ryan Jennings, a resident of Maine who had gone out on vacation with his wife, Emily Jennings and children to Florida. The accident happened on an apparently ordinary day at the ocean where the family was at Juno Beach.
Jennings, 12 year old stepson Jax and his 9 year old daughter Charlie were reported to have been swimming when they were caught in a rip current. Rip currents are large bodies of water that go out of the shore and are able to pull the swimmers to a deeper water within a very short period of time leaving people perplexed.
When Jennings saw the children in distress in the water, he ran in to save them. Later witnesses indicated that he was concerned with the safety of the children. He was able to push his stepson to the shore to receive assistance and he held his daughter on top of the water awaiting the arrival of rescue teams.
The two children survived and went through the situation, however, Jennings could not reach the beach.
Emergency workers later dragged him out of the water and attempted to resuscitate him, however, to no avail.
His wife, Emily Jennings, was interviewed later and she talked about her husband and said that he was a good father and he used to place his family first. She also mentioned that she is now pregnant with their fourth child and this fact broke the hearts of the family even more.
Ryan Jennings was remembered by his friends and family members as a caring husband and father who was very engaged in the life of his children. A fundraising event was initiated to help the family through this hard period after the incident.
Local government subsequently reminded tourists of the risks of rip currents and to avoid going to areas where there are no lifeguards. The officials also added that in case an individual is caught in a rip current, one should attempt to remain calm and swim across the shore rather than attempt to swim directly back along the current.
What started as a family holiday ended with a father losing his life in an attempt to save his children, a move that has since been termed by many people as a final act of love and sacrifice.
