Ethiopia volcanic ash: How to explain this to your child (in simple way)

All about Ethiopia volcanic eruption

So you might have heard people talking about “volcanic ash” in Ethiopia, maybe on the news or online. And since it is everywhere your child asks you about it. But of course you don't want to scare the child. So here is a simple way of explaining it.

Brain teaser for kids: Can you find 4 hidden faces in this image?

What is a volcano?

A volcano is like a giant mountain that has a secret underground oven inside it — filled with super hot melted rock called magma. Sometimes the Earth needs to let out pressure, kind of like when you shake a soda bottle and need to slowly open the cap before it explodes. When that pressure becomes too much, BOOM! The volcano erupts.
And when that happens, magma comes out, but once it reaches the surface and cools down, we call it lava.

And what is volcanic ash?

Now, volcanic ash isn’t the soft gray dust you find in fireplaces. Nooo! It’s more like teeny-tiny pieces of broken rock and glass that shoot up high into the sky when a volcano erupts. These tiny pieces are so small that they can float in the air like smoke.

Think of it like when you crush a cookie into crumbs — except the crumbs are lava pieces that exploded in the air!

4/5

Why Ethiopia?

Ethiopia is a country in East Africa that has many volcanoes because it sits on a special part of the Earth called a rift — a place where huge pieces of the Earth are slowly pulling apart. When the ground moves, lava can find a path to come up, and that creates volcanoes.
One famous volcano in Ethiopia is Erta Ale, known for its “lava lake” — a pool full of bubbling, fiery lava! Cool to look at from far away… not so fun up close.
The one that has erupted recently is the Hayli Gubbi. As per reports, plume of ashes have reached Delhi NCR as of now.

What happens when volcanic ash spreads?

When a volcano erupts, the ash can blow far, far away. The wind carries it like confetti — but not the party kind. The ash can:
Make the sky look gray or foggy
Fall on the ground like powder
Get on cars, roofs, and trees
Make it hard to breathe without a mask
Cause airplanes to be delayed because ash can damage engines
It’s kind of like Earth’s version of a snow day… except it’s warm and dusty instead of fluffy and cold.
