Curiosity Corner: Why does ice float on water?

It’s a thing we’ve all seen. Ice cubes floating gently in a glass of water or frozen lakes forming a solid layer on top, while liquid water stays underneath. Have you ever stopped to think why ice floats at all? Most things get denser when they freeze, causing them to sink. Water, however, acts differently, making it one of the interesting and life-supporting things on Earth. In this edition of Curiosity Corner, we look at the science behind this wonder.

It all comes down to density

The reason ice floats is because of something called density. Which is how tightly packed molecules are in a thing. When something is denser than water, it sinks. When it is less dense, it floats. Amazingly solid ice is actually less dense than water. This means its molecules are more spread out when frozen, allowing it to stay on the surface of sinking to the bottom. It’s a thing that sets water apart from most other liquids.

Water molecules form a structure when frozen

Water is made up of tiny particles called molecules. In form, these molecules move around freely and stay relatively close together. When water freezes, the molecules slow down and arrange themselves into a structured, open, hexagonal pattern. This arrangement creates gaps between molecules, increasing the overall volume. Because the same amount of water now takes up space in solid form, the density decreases. And that’s what makes ice float.

Floating ice protects life

This unusual thing is not just interesting. It’s essential for life on Earth. And when the lakes and ponds freeze during winter, the ice forms on the surface first. Since it floats, it creates a layer that protects the water below from freezing completely. Fish and other aquatic organisms can survive beneath the ice because the water underneath stays relatively warmer. If ice sank instead, entire water bodies could freeze solid from bottom to top, making survival nearly impossible for species.

Temperature plays a role
Water acts differently as it cools. Most liquids continuously shrink as temperatures drop. Water, however, becomes densest at 4 degrees Celsius. As it cools further toward freezing point (0 degrees Celsius), it begins expanding of contracting. And thi s expansion is what causes frozen pipes to burst and ice cubes to take up more space than the water they came from. That little bit of expansion is also what makes ice less dense so it can float on water.
A small thing that makes a difference
Though it may seem like a minor scientific quirk, ice floating on water has shaped ecosystems, weather patterns, and even the survival of civilizations near water bodies. It influences ocean currents, seasonal cycles, and the balance of freshwater environments. Without this unique characteristic, life on Earth could look very different.
