Phogat sisters have made the country at global levels​


Every time a sports event unfolds, of the several names that represent the country outside, the frequent ones are those of the Phogat sisters. These sisters hailing from north India's Haryana state have not just made the country proud, they have created a space in the male dominated dimension of wrestling giving millions of young girls of the country hope to participate. Let's learn about them.

​Geeta Phogat​


1988 born, Geeta Phogat won India's first ever gold medal in wrestling at the Commonwealth Games in 2010. Not just this, Geeta is also the first Indian female wrestler to have qualified for the Olympic Summer Games. She is the daughter of Mahavir Singh Phogat and Daya Shobha Kaur. Geeta has won gold in 2009 Commonwealth Wrestling Championship, 2010 Commonwealth Games, 2012 Summer Olympics.

​Babita Phogat​


1989 born, Babita Phogat, is a year younger to Geeta. The younger daughter of Mahavir Singh Phogat has brought laurels to the country by winning gold in 2014 Commonwealth Games. She brought home silver in the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. Babita has represented the country in 2016 Rio Olympics, 2015 Asian Wrestling Championships, 2014 Asian Games among others.

​Ritu Phogat​


1994 born Ritu Phogat is the sister of Geeta and Babita Phogat. She is the youngest daughter of Mahavir Singh Phogat. Ritu had won a gold medal at the 2016 Commonwealth Wrestling Championship. Ritu is also a martial artist and has made her debut at ONE Championship: Age Of Dragons in November 2019.

​Vinesh Phogat​



1994 born Vinesh Phogat, who was set to become the first set to become the first Indian woman to compete in a wrestling final at the Olympics, was disqualified for being overweight by 100 grams. Vinesh is the niece of Mahavir Singh Phogat and is the cousin of Geeta Phogat and Babita Phogat.

​Priyanka Phogat​


1993 born Priyanka Phogat is the sister of Vinesh Phogat. Geeta and Babita Phogat are her sisters. Priyanka won a silver medal at the 2016 Asian Wrestling Championships in the 55 kg category.
