5 signs you and your kids are slowly drifting away

How does one define distance within family?

The basic paternal instinct when you hear the word “drifting away” is negating and denying the same. “Mine? No way” we roar as we fiercely protect our tribe and claim all is well. But a little perspective shift will help us understand if we are caught in a lukewarm family atmosphere, and what we can do to come out of it. Is there a perfect family where every member is happy 24*7? Not possible! Arguments and dissatisfaction are common in every single household. But what is important is we identify when it transcends boundaries and borders into being distant from each other. Here are some tell-tale signs that you and your children are becoming distant:

2/6

Silence

When you don’t know what to talk to one another beyond a point and the deathly silence that follows- that is scary. It shows that somewhere the bridges are too weak between you and your children. Withholding information or denying the truth is equally scary and to be addressed on priority.

3/6

Showcasing To The World

To showcase your happy moments on social media is great. We all do that. But if you find yourself or your spouse or your children in the family, constantly showcasing every minute detail and arguments and dissatisfaction to the world outside, there's a problem brewing that you need to address.

4/6

Financial Crisis

Everything isn’t rosy at all times in one’s adult life or parenting journey. There are times a family could be going through a difficult financial crisis, and more often than not, that stands high among reasons a family drifts apart. Lack of clarity in finances and uncertainty about the future rank high in distant parents and children.

5/6

Proving Love

Family is where you come home when you are tired. The one that serves you that warm drink when it’s cold out there. Distance within family sees the need to share proof of presence, love or the lack of it. Children demand attention and affection and sap your energies more than fuelling your batteries. They make you feel guilty for the choices you want to make.

6/6

Everything Is A Chore

At some point during one’s parenting journey, parents look out for an escape from the rigmarole, and boredom eventually sets in. It is important to identify the signs of boredom and work our way out of it. When even taking a picture together with your children seems like a chore, it’s only on the list to make you look like a normal family. It’s a facade.
