5 signs of constipation seen in kids (and what you can do to prevent it)

Constipation is one of the most common digestive issues seen in children, especially during early school years. While it may seem minor, untreated constipation can lead to discomfort, poor appetite, and mood changes. Many parents mistake the signs for normal behaviour, so identifying the early symptoms is important. Understanding what triggers constipation, low fibre diet, dehydration, or withholding behaviour can help you prevent it effectively. Here are five signs to watch for and simple steps you can take to ease your child’s discomfort.

2/6

Reduced bowel frequency (Oligoschesis)

One of the clearest signs of constipation is when a child doesn’t pass stool regularly. For most kids, going once a day is normal, but skipping days consistently may indicate a problem. Parents should watch for changes in their child’s routine. If a child avoids the washroom due to school environments, travel, or distractions, constipation may follow. Increasing water intake, offering fibre-rich fruits like pears or prunes, and maintaining a toilet routine can help regulate bowel movements naturally.

3/6

Hard stools and painful defecation (Dyschezia)

If a child cries, strains, or avoids the bathroom because passing stool hurts, constipation may be the cause. Hard stools form when the colon absorbs too much water, usually due to low fibre or irregular habits. Parents may notice small, pellet-like stools or stools that clog the toilet. To ease this, adding whole grains, leafy vegetables, and adequate hydration works wonders. Encouraging kids to sit comfortably on the toilet with proper support can also reduce the fear of painful pooping.

4/6

Abdominal pain and distention (Abdominal bloating)

Kids often complain of stomach aches without understanding the reason behind it. If the pain is dull, comes and goes, or sits around the belly button, constipation could be the culprit. A bloated stomach or frequent gas is also a strong indicator. Parents should monitor whether the pain decreases after the child passes stool. Gentle abdominal massages, warm baths, and increasing daily physical activity, including simple playtime, can stimulate bowel movement and offer relief.

5/6

Decreased appetite (Anorexia)

Constipation can slow down digestion, making children feel full even after eating small amounts. You may notice your child refusing snacks, skipping meals, or complaining that food “doesn’t feel good” in their stomach. Over time, this can affect energy levels and growth. Offering smaller, more frequent meals and including gut-friendly foods like yogurt can help. Teaching mindful eating habits and limiting constipating foods like excessive cheese or processed snacks can make a big difference.

6/6

Fecal soiling (Encopresis)

Many parents misunderstand stool soiling as a hygiene issue, but it often indicates chronic constipation. When hard stool remains stuck in the colon, softer stool leaks around it, causing accidental stains. Kids may feel embarrassed and try to hide it. This sign needs gentle handling and a consistent prevention plan. Encourage regular toilet breaks after meals, create a calm bathroom environment, and seek a pediatrician’s advice if soiling continues or causes discomfort.
