5 Ayurvedic rituals kids should follow everyday for immunity and memory

Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, isn't just for adults. Almost everyone in the world right now is stressed, and children are no different. The new age kids of today are faced with both environmental and lifestyle issues. On one hand, they have to deal with things like peer pressure, stress, bullying etc, on the other, it can be poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, and pollution. All this combined can affect a child's immunity in growing up years. However, Ayurveda comes to the rescue. Here are 5 Ayurvedic rituals kids should follow everyday for immunity and memory (to be done under adult supervision only)

2/6

Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic practice where one can swish a small amount of edible oil (like sesame or coconut oil) in their mouth for a few minutes and then spit it out. This helps remove harmful bacteria from the mouth and keeps gums and teeth strong.

How it helps: A clean mouth reduces infections and improves overall immunity. It also helps clear the mind, which can improve concentration and memory during studies. It is especially beneficial for kids who are still learning about oral hygiene, and struggling with focus

How to do it: After waking up, take a teaspoon of oil and gently swish it around the mouth for 3-5 minutes. Then spit it out and rinse with warm water. Please note that this is not a replacement for regular brushing/flossing.

3/6

Nasya (Nasal Oil Application)

Nasya is the practice of applying a few drops of herbal oil into the nostrils. This helps clear nasal passages, improves breathing, and enhances brain function, which helps in studies and play alike.

How it helps: Clear breathing supports better oxygen flow to the brain, improving memory and focus. It also strengthens the immune system by protecting against infections that children catch frequently.

How to do it: Use 1-2 drops of warm sesame or medicated oil in each nostril in the morning. The process is gentle and safe for kids when done correctly.

4/6

Abhyanga (Daily Oil Massage)

Abhyanga is a gentle daily massage using warm herbal oils on the body. This ritual relaxes muscles, improves blood circulation, and calms the nervous system.

How it helps: Regular oil massage boosts immunity by improving lymphatic flow and reduces stress, which can harm memory and learning ability.

How to do it: Use warm sesame or coconut oil to massage the child’s body for 10-15 minutes before bath time. Make it a fun and relaxing routine and an activity he looks forward to. If pressed for time, it can be done 2-3 times a week as well.

5/6

Drinking Warm Turmeric Milk

There is a reason why our mums gave us "haldi vaala doodh" every night. Turmeric milk, also called “golden milk,” is a traditional Ayurvedic drink made by mixing turmeric powder in warm milk with a little honey.

How it helps: Turmeric has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that strengthen the immune system and support brain health.

How to do it: Give kids a small cup of warm turmeric milk in the evening. Use a pinch of turmeric powder and sweeten with honey if needed. Avoid giving honey to children under one year.

6/6

Simple Breathing Exercises And Yoga

Yes, kids too can do Yoga! Pranayama is the practice of controlled breathing exercises that calm the mind and increase oxygen supply to the brain.

How it helps: Regular breathing exercises reduce anxiety, improve focus, and enhance memory, which helps kids perform better in school.

How to do it: Teach kids simple breathing techniques like “Anulom Vilom” (alternate nostril breathing) for 5 minutes daily. This can be done in the morning or evening, after school.
