Getting pregnant after miscarriage: All you need to know

Losing the baby at any stage of pregnancy can be traumatising for a couple. The fear of trying to conceive for the second time may linger longer than expected. There might be constant anxiety but if you are committed to having a baby there is nothing that can come in your way. Miscarriage doesn't affect your fertility in any way. You just need to be a little cautious to be successful in your attempt. Here are a few things that might help you:

2/5

How soon can you get pregnant?

Pregnancy leads to several hormonal changes in a woman's body. Similarly, miscarriage also takes a heavy toll on your health. When trying to get pregnant after a miscarriage, it is safe to wait for a couple of months. This gap is important for uterus recovery from a miscarriage and regains strength for a safe and healthy pregnancy. There is no fixed time you must wait to try again, it all depends on how soon you feel you are ready.

However, we would recommend you check with your doctor also to ensure there are no complications. If there is scarring in the uterus, pieces of placenta left behind or significant blood loss, you might need to wait a little longer. Even if there are no risks of complications, wait as long as you want to process your emotions. Typically, it is not recommended to have sex for two weeks after a miscarriage to prevent an infection.

3/5

Is it difficult to conceive after a miscarriage?

It is normal to be concerned about the second pregnancy. But if you take precautions, then all will go well. Pregnancy after miscarriage will neither be easy nor more difficult than a normal pregnancy. A 2016 study from the National Institute of Health, published in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology suggests that about 70 per cent of women conceive within three months of miscarriage.

But during the recovery phase, you need to pay extra attention to your health and manage the underlying causes and improve lifestyle risk factors that may have contributed to your miscarriage in the first place. That could increase the chances of a healthy pregnancy.

Tips to reduce the risk of future miscarriage

To reduce the risk of miscarriage in the future, here are a few things that must need to take care of:

Manage your underlying health condition: Get a full-body check-up before trying to conceive if you are suffering from any health conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure. Take precautions to bring them in control.

Manage your weight: Being overweight increases the chances of miscarriage. Maintaining health is a key to a healthy pregnancy. Take appropriate steps to get in shape.

Eat healthily and exercise: Eat healthily and exercise is necessary to conceive as well as for the growth and development of the baby. So, make changes in your daily routine accordingly.

Other things to keep in mind

Try to manage your stress: Stress might make it harder to get pregnant and can lead to high-risk pregnancy. If you are feeling anxious try yoga, meditation, deep breathing, and acupuncture, all be beneficial. Talk about it with your family and friends and if necessary take professional's help.

Quit smoking and drinking: If you smoke or drink alcohol try to quit if you want to have a healthy pregnancy. Even try your best to steer clear of second- or third-hand. Excessive smoking and drinking can affect both male and female fertility.
